My Buddies Camaro Stolen in less then 5 mins.....

happened this afternoon at Target. He parked on the side of the store. Type of guy that doesnt want to get his car dinged up, but their were cars and people around in his vicinity.

Video Footage shows 3 guys come up to the car. One was a lookout and the other 2 got into the car. No broken windows or anything. These guys were pros. In and out in less then 5 mins. No tow truck drove away with the car.

Keep an eye on ur car people.

Seems to be. Was this in the East Bay??
I would be pulling fuses to disable the cars at this point. This is at least the second report in a week, of drive off theft where no key was needed to steal the car.
Thieves may monitor these threads so I will not list how to disable the cars here.

I thought from the description you were going to say it was 5 minutes after he bought the car. Either way, it is real crap that any of us have to worry about our cars being jacked. One of the reasons that I rarely park my car anywhere besides in my garage. The only time I will park my car somewhere is if there are at least 2 or 3 cars more expensive than mine in the same lot.

Yep, I think they have that area cased.
One car was stolen from a employee parking garage in Pleasanton.
They have to know something besides hitting a random parking garage.
It will probably be found in Oakland stripped by tomorrow morning.

Regards to you friend, that has to suck big time.

I call BS! Most members here have said that it is impossible to steal the Camaro since you would need specific key and would need the code for the car to recognize.
/s

On a serious note, were you able to see any type of machine that they might have used to access the car? I wonder what is the weak point on the car.

Does anyone know if any of the Camaros stolen had viper alarms, smart start gps or lojack? I just got the viper security alarm installed Saturday in Dublin and the owner said another customer had his camaro for a day when it was stolen.

OP were you able to tell how they opened your door? My bet is something called a "slim jim" ie a piece of metal that slides in between you glass and weatherstripping used to hook the door latch and open the door if done properly will leave no damage. Getting it started and getting the alarm off is a whole other story. The reason I mention this is that I remeber seeing these brackets you could install that could prevent using said devices. Not sure where you would buy them though... but there are products out there. It's a shame that we could possibly need them.

Also since it was such a populated area, and they got away with it, is it possible someone hacked the rf frequencies for our remotes?

The angle the camera was at and their was another car 2 spaces away blocking the driver side area, so we couldnt see what they used. It was pretty quick and they were on their way out. Def pros they looked like they have done this before. Just the way they were setup and smooth with the whole process.

His camaro just had the factory alarm and of course onstar. Onstar told him the car couldnt be located, so I believe they disabled it before they left.

If their pros it doesnt matter what you have. Seems like the pros are hitting the Camaro's in the area. Be on the lookout.

Sounds like another case of the mysterious devices they are using to "hack" and steal cars (I'm sure someone will post the news video about it again. As it usually shows up in all these threads.)

Going out on a limb here, I would guess since On star can locate your car, a hacked On star can also. Locate, steal, strip.

There was a new piece on CNN recently which documented a new "black box" device that will open the doors, defeat alarms, and start the car. It is effective on all vehicles.

Law enforcement is working on finding out just what this is, where it comes from, and how it works. Unfortunately as of now, there is no known way to protect your car from this type of theft.

....you think thieves use On-star(or some kind of On-star code) to break in? An RF 'grabber' would make plenty sense..

Remove fuses or relay's as necessary to disable any necessary circuits to drive the car.

Agreed. You just need to be cautious and have insurance. Thats all you can really do at this point.
