Question Oil level?????

I just had my oil changed at the dealership....1270 miles. The owners manual says it takes 8.0 quarts. That is what we put in....We cranked it, let it warm up, and the level on the stick was mid way in the cross hatch area.....shouldn't it be at the top of the cross hatch, at the first hole?? I drove home 15 miles and the level was the same...do I need to add a little more? I guess I can check it cold in the morning, but?

Where have I been seeing people adding 8.3-8.6 quarts? Or did I dream that? Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but I have to know....

Also did the rear end fluid change....glad to get that out of the way. We used the GM rear end PN to refill....and Mobil1 5-30 for the oil and....K&N oil filter....

The technically schematics of the LS3/L99 says 8.6 quarts

It says 8 quarts with filter, that's what I would use and did. The dipstick probably isn't the most accurate thing in the world and over filling it will only cause windage and a loss of power. As long as the pick up is immersed it's fine. I looked at my stick afer putting in exactly 8 quarts and it was half way into the hash. That's where it will always stay now, it's a reference now.

Owners Manual section 11-2
Engine Oil w/ Filter

3.6L V6 Engine : 6-qts
6.2L V8 Engine : 8-qts
(L99 & LS3)

V6 : SAE 5w-30 GM6094M
Do Not use 10w-40, 20w-50 or any other viscosity grade oil not recommended

V8 : SAE 5w-30 / GM4718M (L99 & LS3) Mobil 1 is Factory fill ..
Do Not use 10w-40,20w-50 or any other viscosity grade oil not recommended

I changed my oil twice already with Dino , on my next oil change at 2500-3000 mi. I'm switching over to Mobil 1 from there on...

10w-30 is not mention in the Owners Manual , I would check with your Dealerships Service Dept. to see what they have to say about that.. But I would go by your Owners Manual recommendations..

So, 8.6 qt or 8.0 qt.?

Ok, I am seeing almost 50/50 on this in here....

I know the owners manual says 8 qts, but then that is half way up the hash mark on the stick....and then others are putting 8.5-.6 qts in....to get to the top of the stick.

I would guess the owners manual is the boss here....but I would just like to hear the reasons on filling it to an extra 1/2 quart?

I may acutally go and drain out 1/2 quart of mine before I drive it again....

This thread is for input only.....thanks!

Kind of off the subject but I have to laugh at all the "What kind of oil should I use" threads, GM says Mobile 1 5-30, I think anything more expensive is just a waste of money. My old C4 only ever got Mobile 1 5-30 and with 90K on the clock after tearing it down you would never know it had that many miles on it. Everything was clean and not a speck of sludge anywhere or varnishing. I only tore the motor down to inspect and make a cam change with some head work and new springs.

As far as putting an extra 1/2 quart in, I don't think it would hurt anything but it's not going to help either. My feelings are that it can only hurt more than help because of the windage I mentioned earlier. You get too much oil in the pan and the crank will tend to fling it around more than designed. Will it or won't it create a loss of some HP? Who knows, I just think it better to keep the oil at the recommended level and not refute what the manual says. It's in acceptable range at 8 quarts, good enough for me.

Ok, thanks for all the replies.

I just went out there and drained 1/2 quart out of the Camaro, and feel much better about it now. So, I know I have exactly 8qts in there, and that's where it will stay from now on!

Thanks!

it states in the owners manual that if the oil is on the crosshatched area the level is fine. it also stated the only time you should add is if it is below that cross hatched area.
