Is this mileage too high for a 2014?

I've been looking at a 2014 convertible 2SS/RS at a lot. It's used, and the dealership has it listed at $32,200. The thing that's keeping me from rushing down there is that it has 15,500 miles on it. If those are highway miles I wouldn't mind, but if the previous owner put those miles on it delivering pizzas, I'd have to pass on it.

I don't suppose there's any way to find this sort of thing out is there? I could sign up with CarFax and find out what states it's been registered in, but that's no guarantee either.

Any comments on this?

Check the average speed in the DIC. If it's up around 40 mph then there's a good chance that it was 15000 primarily highway miles.

In CA, previous rental cars MUST be disclosed as such. I think most, if not all other states, also require that.

On the other hand, in spite of a vow I made many years ago to NEVER buy a rental car (I know what happens to those things, because I have done it to those things a lot... I had rented a Buick once that was brand new and had it FULLY airborne before it had 30 miles on the odometer!), I have broken my vow twice... couldn't pass up the deal. Those two vehicles have been the most reliable and excellent cars I have ever owned. Even my Camaro: Prior rental, with 13,000 miles on the clock. I'm at 87,000 miles now, still waiting for the first hint of a problem. None in the forecast.

Need more information.

Carfax -- was it ever listed as a fleet or rental vehicle? If yes, I'd steer clear of it.

Also, when was it first sold? The national average for miles traveled in a car is somewhere around 12,000. If the car was sold in mid/late 2013 as a 2014 model year vehicle, it's possible that it's already been on the road for a year+ and the mileage isn't far off for being just slightly higher than average.

The DIC Average Speed isn't a good indicator unless you personally know it's a lifetime average for the car. It can be reset. So, it might have been reset at the last fill up and you'd never know.

Idk, that's not too hard to do. I put about 15k on mine first year I owned it. And I work from home. Have put another 18k on in last 2 years.

I have a 2014 Vert and got it out in April and in October when I parked it I had 17,700 on it, so it is not out of the possibility. I would think it would have to be a lot of highway miles though. Can you get the carfax to see when it was first registered? You can also tell if the service was done right also.

have the dealer pull the delivery date and that will let you know how fast it racked up the miles, mine was a year old at the end of october and has a little over 6000

average miles per year across the USA is 12,000.

15,000 on a 2014 isn't that bad, it really depends on when the car was first put into service.

while it may be a 2014, and one would assume that it was put into service at the beginning of the model year in Sept/Oct 2013, it is possible it was put into service earlier.

for example I had a 2005 Chrysler 300C. the model year started in Sept 2004 for 2005 models, only Chrysler released the 300c in March of 2004 as a 2005 model, not a 2004.5 year model.

for me this sucked mileage wise, because the car always had 8 months more mileage on it than its model year.

that is to say @ one model year old (Sept 2004 to Oct 2005) as my car was reported to be, I had 18,000 miles, not because I put 18,000 miles on the car in 1 year, I did that in 19 months, but DMV/KBB/Trade in etc wise, they don't count March 2004 as the beginning of the model year, so while my car was 1 model year old in theory, in reality it was 1.75 model years old.

in the case of the Camaro, if it was put into service in August of 2013 for example, it would be 16 months old, not 14, so the extra 3,000 miles might be right within the yearly average.

15,500 / 16 = 968.5 or 11,625 per year
15,500 / 14 = 1107 or 13,285 per year

so check car fax for the in service date, the date it was first titled to the first owner, that then do the math, that will tell you if it is around the national average..

Wow, 9 replies in the first hour - thanks everyone!

I'll have Carfax do the homework on it and decide from there. I'll check the lot first and make sure it's still there though. Not need to drop $40.00 for the skinny on a car that's already been sold!

I BOUGHT MY 2014 4 ONLY 4 MONTHS AGO...ALREADY HITTING 6,000 MILES. OF COURSE SOME FROM OTHER PEOPLE TEST DRIVING IT. BUT I TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF MY CAR.BUT THE NEXT OWNER WILL NEVER KNOW HOW MUCH TLC I PUT INTO MY CAR (IF I EVER SOLD IT). AND I WORK SOMEWHAT OUT OF TOWN (15 MINUTES AWAY FROM HOME ACROSS THE RIVER WHERE I STAY). I'D SAY 50/50 CITY, AND HIGWAY MILES ON IT.

I WILL SAY MY CO-WORKER BOUGHT A USED 2013 CONVERT. CAMARO AND REGRETS IT. HE'S HAD LEAKING ISSUES SINCE HE BOUGHT THE CAR. BUT THEN AGAIN HE NEVER CHECKED IT BEFORE HE SIGNED THE PAPERS.
