Camaro Super Sport might get a 550-plus-horsepower supercharged V8

Sleuth -- Hot off the press!
Article Launched: 04/25/2008 04:41:48 PM PDT

Camaro Super Sport might get a 550-plus-horsepower supercharged V8: By now everyone knows about the look and shape of the new Chevrolet Camaro that s due to hit dealer lots next year as a 2010 model. But the Sleuth has the real dirt on what comes after that. During testing at Germany s famed Nürburgring race circuit, the Sleuth spotted the latest prototype: the range-topping Super Sport or SS model.

It has Brembo brand brakes, a treatment normally reserved for very high-performance models, and an air intake sitting way out front of the engine in the cold air. Chevy parent General Motors is tight-lipped about what V8 will be used, but sources have indicated the car will get a version of the supercharged powerplant used in the Cadillac CTS-V and Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

Sounds like a winner as the car tries to gain back what was lost to the Ford Mustang when the last Camaro was dropped.

I don't see any hard facts about that the Camaro will get the LSA. There were no badges so any mention of SS or trim level of any type would be mere guesswork. Its the same speculation we've had for weeks.

The article is dated 4/25 but pics were posted here of the car with the Brembos on 4/7.

Another magazine trying to sell copies by speculation. The new camaro top dawg could have dual fused LS9's for a whopping 1300 hp. I'm as correct as the magazine is...

That would be amazing as well. Send me over dual fused LS9's lol..

I think it is safe to assume that perhaps the Camaro will get a 550 plus horsepower engine if it is to be a GT500 killer.. Which one is another story. If it is the powerplant in the new ZR1, that would be amazing and perhaps I will have to buy one at that point in time...

You really are clueless aren't you? It won't be called the Top Dog, it will be the Popcorn. And it won't have 2 LS9s. It will have 4 supercharged 572s, 1 for each wheel. No transmission needed either. 4000 hp -at the wheels. muah ha ha ha haaaaa. Its gonna weigh 6000 lbs, but who cares at that point?

Like The Tigre? Two engines, one for the front wheels, one for the back but improved specifically for the Camaro? Man I wish I were as smart as you!!!

I think the key word in the article is "MIGHT." The new Camaro "might" sprout wings and fly like Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.

I liked the line, "It has Brembo brand brakes, a treatment normally reserved for very high-performance models...". So I guess the Cobalt SS is a "very high-performance model" now? :P

No kidding; for a four-banger, it gets it

Even though I make fun of all the speculation these rags' put out there, I guess I don't add much better. I still like the fact that we may be getting Brembos though, because the OEM brakes on my '02 suck hard

They need to stop publishing this nonsense. There is no legitimate evidence of an engine with 550 hp. I'd love to see it happen, but I'll wait for GM to suggest that another V8 trim will exist within the first year. So far no such evidence exists.

The LSA doesn't count?

but it isn't validated, yet...I think.

I thought the Cobalt was getting a 550 hp engine. I mean it does have Brembos so it must right?

No kidding; that's the mentality I feel the rags' are coming across with sometimes. I guess, since it's been allegedy that GM was working on something like four or five supercharged 6.2s that entertaining the idea that Camaro is getting one makes some sense. I'd sure hope for power around LSA area though, although the alleged LS8 at around 500 wouldn't be too bad either. I think GM should just make it simpler and produce LS9s and LSAs (mostly so we can get 550 horse .)

OH WELL! I guess we'll have to wait several more months until we really know...

I think we can all agree the article was a bit dated with its info and purely speculative with the rest.

I still think that rumors need citations to be legitimate. Maybe KU has rammed the whole MLA format or anti-plagiarism thing too far down my throat, but I still believe that conjecture is not enough to believe. There are some traditions with the Camaro that I expect in the next generation, like being second to the Corvette, featuring a V8 and a V6, and competing with the Mustang and Charger. Some of these are substantiated and other traditions are not. An engine is just speculation. What would we all say when neither the L76 nor the LS3 make the Camaro? Who will get to say, "I told you so," because they were right about the car? To date, we only have rumors of the engine lineup of a potential Supermaro, but we don't have any proof that GM will initially sponsor a ridiculously powerful 500+ hp Camaro. I need validation from GM or an insider. I don't care what these magazines say or what our logical deductions say. I hope the Camaro has a 550 hp monster from the factory, but currently no hard evidence exists. No one has claimed to witness a supercharged mule or heard a blower. No one has seen the engine. There is no evidence, so why are we leaning so hard on pure speculation to explain what clearly does not yet exist?
