? from a newbie...

Can anyone give me a striaght answer to these two questions? I have heard so many different explainations and not being a seasoned driver like some of you I could really use the info.

1. What exactly is "wheel hop?"

2. Does the term "dump the clutch" mean to simply slide your foot off the edge of the clutch pedal (with high engine RPM) and let it engage on its own, or does it just mean letting off the clutch at a faster or more aggressive rate than you would for a normal launch from a red light with your foot on the clutch pedal throughout the release?

Thanks guys...much appreciated!

wheel hop- basically, the wheels are gaining traction, then losing traction, then gaining traction, then losing traction. slip/grab/slip/grab/slip/grab/slip/grab/slip/grab/slip/grab/ etc
what this does is place extra stress loads on the drivetrain parts every time the wheel get traction

dumping the clutch- basically, rev the engine and let off the clutch as fast/hard as you can.

Thanks CS...the letting off the clutch "as fast/hard as you can" is what confuses me. It seems the fastest way to do this would be to simply move your foot to the left and let the clutch pedal spring into action, is this how most do it, or do they keep their foot on the pedal while releasing it as fast/hard as they can?

most keep their foot on it. with sliding your foot off the side, you can run into the problem of dumping it prematurely and repositioning your foot after the launch to shift to the next gear
