De-tune ls3?

kinda strange question to ask but, anyone know how they are going to (if they use the ls3) detune it, i mean you think it will be with timing, or changing the computer, ect..??

I've read a bit about and seen dynos that lead some to believe that there wasn't really anything major done differently to the engines that would cause any difference in the power like the ratings reflected. I think there might have been some minor changes to any of the paths that fuel is brought in or exhaust is going out like the heads and exhaust manifolds maybe. Pretty much with the LS1 for example the F-Bodies were just underrated at the 305-320 that was claimed. Lots of them bone stock would put down the same kinda numbers on a dyno that an LS1 corvette would even though the Corvette was rated with higher hp. IMO i think it's more of a marketing thing.

I'm sure they'd try a L92 cam or something like that since the heads are pretty much the same, with the exception of the valvetrain. More restrictive intake and exhaust systems would also drop the numbers a bit.

intake, exhaust, and fudging. These are the three main reasons why Camaros make less power than corvettes with the same engine.

I made that statement when people thought we'd put an LS2 or a Z06 engine in the Camaro...........my point was: The LS2 is an old engine -- we have new stuff that you haven't heard about --- (remember -- this quote was a while ago!) --

I was NOT referring to Turbo Charged 4 cylinder engines!!!!!!!

While this quote would lead us to believe a new motor will be implemented in the Camaro, the cost of doing so would make that idea less than likely. I stronly believe that we will see an engine that is already in production with significant improvements. The most logical would be the LS3 or the L76, but there are other possibilities. What we haven't seen are the modifications that will be made to these existing engines.

Oh I agree it's definitely going to be a small block V8. Think of how many different versions GM makes right now. This will be a new version with a new RPO if I read fbodfather correctly.

besides the hp ratings, the vette has a better exhaust system, the camshaft is a lil different, the egr setup (if it even has it) is different, the intake is restrictive as hell on most f-bods (see free ram air mod for LS1s), as far as the tuning, most f-bodies came out with a detuned program which cut timing a lil sooner, changed the fuel injection tables, the shift tables, and various other things to keep the power numbers at a certain point. however, some ls1s did make it thru with a better tune out of the factory. a couple friends of mine with the exact same year cars (02 z28s) and the exact same mods (CAI, exhaust) dynoed one day, one had about a 23hp increase over the other guy. just depends on the tune. it can make or break you

Agreed, they held identical engines, in fact f-bodies typically put down more due to the non-IRS.

Not true, the cam differences are marginally different. LS1TECH is down right now, otherwise I would quote the differences. GM did away with the egr in 01' on both models when the LS6 intake came out. They had the same intakes, 98-00 were LS1, 01+ got the LS6 casting. Free ram air mod does jack, f-bodies were not detuned, performance wise ls1's were within all practicality were the same for the respective year, regardless which vehicle they were clothed in. All LS1's were created equal, weather in a corvette, a Z28 or SS. They're the same, 345-350 depending on opinion, then they got around a 15ph boost in 01' for the ls6 intake.

Hopefully they'll give it an LS3 and "underrate" it.
