Oshawa CAW Deal Ratified
It's been ratified now No negotiation tension in Oshawa, just focused on the new Camaro
A deal struck between General Motors and its unionized workers means the company can stay in the industry game, says the head of the GM Oshawa bargaining unit.
“My whole intention was to secure product and we have secured new product,” said Peterborough resident Keith Osborne with CAW Local 222.
“It’s an ongoing cycle but the fear was, I thought GM might have pulled out of Canada all together.”
The GM deal was ratified Thursday, while Chrysler CAW workers ratified their deal Friday, rounding up negotiations with the Big Three.
GM had planned to lay off 1,000 workers — the second shift of the Oshawa truck plant — this fall, but that move has been delayed until at least September 2009.
Production of the Impala has been extended from 2010 to 2012 and the plant is guaranteed production lines for a new car and a new truck.
Production on every vehicle, except the Camaro introduced in 2006, was scheduled to end by 2011, Osborne said.
GM eliminated the truck plant’s third shift last year.
About 2,300 people from the Peterborough area work at GM Oshawa. The plant has about 8,700 workers.
Osborne said he was especially concerned about workers with less seniority during bargaining.
“Trying to find a job in the manufacturing sector without auto around, you wouldn’t find them and that affects Peterborough, too,” he said.
