backfire? take it to dealer if its happening frequently, they should be able to tune it out easily.

is there any shudder or feeling inside the car when it makes the noise?
Are you backing out straight or turning to back out?

There is another thread on popping sound from rearends. But these were more like the "old car in bicycle spokes" sound. Mine does this first thing in the a.m. backing down my unlevel driveway

^ no it wouldent be that it, one of the major things that it could be is your rear differential, it could also be your suspension being torqued.

Also your parking brake might be locking and not releasing and being forced out when you go in reverse after not driving it for awhile, check the relese springs for the parking break.

it wouldent make a loud popping noise the way he is describing it to be. That would be very minimal rust.

Mine does that too, but it almost sounds like the tires are stuck to the floor in my garage.

It's the pads sticking to a rusty rotor like everyone is saying. It happens to me everytime I wash my car and then set the parking brake and don't drive it until the next day. No issue, don't worry.
