Off Center Shifter

My dads trying to buy a 69 Camaro and I think weve found one we like but it has something weird... an off center shifter. Ive never seen this before and I dont know if he or I would like it. What do you guys think about this and can it be changed?

edit:

also, when I see a picture of a car like this

Is thetransmission here a previous automatic and just changed into a maual?

Have you guys pulled the carpet back and looked at the hump? I'm wondering if it wasn't an automatic car originally, and someone just stuck the 4-speed shifter where they wanted it during the conversion? Does it have an auto or stick column?? My Camaro assumbly manual shows all of the shifter humps coming straight up...

It's not a '69 Camaro shifter. The '69 Camaro shifter is a unique setup and does not use "universal" shifter parts like that. It looks like it would function fine but it is probably designed to fit some other vehicle.

I emailed him and he told me this

Quote:

What do you guys think?

Well, the stock shifter was offset just a tad I believe, but that had nothing to do with the location of the hole/boot/ring. Our big block Nova has the stock hump & shifter setup, maybe I can grab a picture...I'm gonna say they added a new hole/shifter to an automatic car, or just made a new hole alltogether on a 4-speed hump. The shifter came up through the same location, whether it was a standard setup or had a console, so that tells you the hole can't be offset to one side...

Also, I'm not sure what you're asking with the second picture in your original poast?

No. What you see there is the center console option, which I prefer instead of just the shifter on the floor in your first pic. All the automatics have the center console, but in case of the manuals, it was an option. It also holds the 4 gauge cluster pack as well. Similar to the 4 gauge cluster pack in the 2010. Hope that helps.
(Although, the 4 gauge cluster pack in the pic you provided, looks modified.)

The shifter on this car has been changed. This could be a manual car, the fastest way to check is put it on a lift and see if the original hole has been enlarged. But the original factory shifter would not have this offset. Nice looking car by the way. Good luck!

That's not right...if you didn't order the D55 (console) with an automatic, then it was on the column...our Yenko started out as a column shift automatic car, then Yenko added the Hurst Dual Gate shifter on the floor, and simply knocked the pin out of the shift arm and removed it from the collar.

I thought the only '69 Camaros that were V6 cars, had the column shift and all the V8 Camaros were on the floor with the console as far as automatics are concerned??
Very cool. Learn something new every day. Thank you!
