2010 SS vs my brother's Pontiac G8 (drag race)

My brother has enticed me to drag him at the quarter mile speedway. We'll probably have to do it in the spring as it has already snowed here. But, he tells me that many G8's are getting 1/4 mile times about exactly the same as our SS Camaro's.

He has an automatic and has no chance of mistake (outside of poor reaction time). I could miss 3rd gear and look really stupid. Is he just psyching me out?

Do I really have a lot to fear with this family truckster?! It is fast...but couldn't the SS take it easily (as long as I don't miss a gear)?

Any utube drags of this race as I couldn't find any? BTW I'm completely stock as is he. I don't want to let us down!!!

is it the g8 gt or the GXP? that will make a difference, although either way you should win.

Stock G8 GT's run in the mid to high 13's in the 1/4 mile. Not slow by any means, but you should still take him pretty easily.

You dont have a clue. If it is a GT then it run's in the mid to high 13's and a few people have got them in the low 13's The GXP is somewhere near the SS. And hear's a little proof. Go to 2 minute's in.

The G8 GXP I believe would be a great race between it and an SS .. close stock for stock.

So do some l99 camaros.

G8 gt's run mid 13's...13.5-13.8, with quite a few glory passes at 13.3.

If you can handle the manual you'll be fine.

Not sure which model he has but not the gxp. It's weird that a family sedan could match the camaro. Is it a lot lighter or something? I understand that the G8 doesn't even have the matching HP that we have...??

it's actually a little heavier. The Camaro and G8 are very similar cars...based on the same platform. If it's a stock G8-GT, than you should be faster...unless he's a much better driver than you are.

the difference is the G8 GXP comes with a 3.70 rear gear. My friend scott has a GXP, its white, nice ride, but the good news is my camaro is still faster. Were both manuals as well.

Man, the internet never ceases to amaze me.

quickest time for G8GT(bone stock) is 13.3x ( I think it was 13.34)
tune/intake/catback have dipped in the 12s by several people on our message boards.

Average times for decent conditions is 13.5-13.6. Horrible track conditions/weather then yeah you might see a 14.

I raced an LS1 equipped WS6 shortly after buying this car, and I won, by a small bit. So they aren't a slouch.

But I think the Camaro should win the race assuming you know don't screw up the driving.

PS Fastest GXP recorded (stock) is 12.8x.

The G8 is no slouchy family car in my opinion. Although I didn't really pay attention that much, I did watch a G8 gt and new Camaro SS at a local drag strip go at it quite a few times. It was a couple of buddies racing and the ones I watched they went back and fouth on who won. They were pretty close on their times. Of course it depends on the driver and neither were pro's.

60' times !!
Iam guesing you never been to a drag strip in your SS ?
If you can launch good you should win , but more than likely you will blow the tires or bog and try to catch up .

If you want a sure fire "WIN" , find your sweet spot in 2nd gear and race him from a roll (not on the street , but a private course) .

IIRC G8's trap 100-105mph and SS 6speeds trap 104-109 mph ...

Everything being equal (skilled driver, track conditions, etc),The 2010 Camaro is about a 1/2 second faster than a G8 GT in the 1/4 mile.

But all it takes is a bad launch or messed up shift, and its all over. Lots of guys run high 13s (or slower) in stock Camaros because of poor 60' times or poor shifting.

But with a skilled driver behind the wheel, a G8 GT doesn't stand a chance.

I've never drag raced before ever. But I'm no slouch at driving either. What does it mean to 'find my sweet spot in second?' I really don't want to lose!!

Its tricky launching a high HP RWD/stright drive car , especially in front of a crowd .
I had a 96 Z28 6 speed , 1st time 9.6 in the 1/8 after a lil practice I got it down to 9.0 but with no more HP .....

2nd gear Roll start , lets say 4000-4500 RPM(whats that like 45-50mph) your car should not get any wheel spin and pull like a freight train .That will take the launch and wheel spin out of the equation .

If its a GT he needs a bit of luck to beat you, just as your suspect. The G8 GT is generally faster than Dodge Charger/Challenger R/T's. There are plenty that have recorded times faster than SS's, according to our own fast list. But thats not identical conditions for each. Its close enough to be interesting but you have the advantage. Unless its a GXP

Sounds to me like a really pointless way race, the winner will always be the car with the best power to weight ratio. Driver skill, grip, and gearing are all marginalized. Some people scoff at drag racing because they think it doesn't take enough driver skill (I disagree but ... ). This on the other hand takes the driver out of the equation completely.

They dont run to bad. With only a tune, my buddy ran a 13.15 @ 105 last week. Hes an auto and not a GXP. This was a 50 degree day here in MI. I cant wait to get my SS tuned to see what the results will be.
