Question L99 How to launch from a stop at the strip?

I'm going to a car show tomorrow and they have drags open, I may try this but I don't know how to launch my L99 "properly".

How do I set it up?
Traction and Stabil off (hold button 7 seconds)
Car in "M" (Sport) mode

Foot on Gas and Foot on Brake then let off brake at green? What RPM do I want to try to reach on the gas while I'm at the line?

Sorry guys, I don't race and have never done this before in any car, let alone one with so many damn computers.

I took suggestions from fellow members here and managed a best time of 12.95. I removed TC only and put it in Sports mode. Took off from idle so as to not spin and just mashed the throttle. You can try brake stalling it until you loose traction to see if you get better times that way. I was bracket racing so I did not want to try it as I might have spun a little and lost the race, lol.

I wish I could help, but I'm still working on it. My 60-ft times are all over the place. My best time so far (8.45 @ 84.83 in the 1/8th) was with TC/ST off (Competitive Mode) and dropping it into Sport mode, then taching up to about 1100, releasing the brake and flooring it.

But I think I did the same thing on the next run, but had enough tire spin to lose 5 hundreths in the 60 ft , so track conditions play a huge part too.

As mentioned, your launch technique is going to depend on the track conditions. The better the prep (very sticky track), the harder you can launch (higher rpm brake stall).

I like to do a dry burn out before my run. I do not use the water box. I just back up and get my car straight (TC off) and mash the gas. I do a nice 20 ft long burn out just to clean off the tires and warm them up a little bit.

Then I stage the car.

I like to launch around 1000 rpms. I hold the car on the line with one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas (brake stall). I rev to just under 1000 rpms and then lift up on the brake and roll quickly into the gas (not quite flooring the gas) on the last amber/yellow light.
The car comes off the line nice and smooth.
I got five consecutive 1.9x sec 60' times using this method.

Sport Mode - TC off. I forgot to put the tranmission is Sport Mode (Left it in D) and I ran my fastest time of the night? Go figure - but my car is tuned.

On one run I decided to try launching at 1500 rpms and I got a ton of wheel spin and I had to abort the run. So I will not be doing that again. I'll keep the rpms to around 900 - 1000 on the launch.

I would not use the TC unless its absolutely necessary (no track prep).

On most tracks, you can figure out what works for a nice smooth launch with the TC off.

Your car will run its best times with the TC off (if you can figure out the launch).

does pcm torque management turn off if you with tc off?
heard pcm has torque management that will lower power in lower gears.
dad bringing his L99 to the track for first time saturaday.
so seem 1000rpms to 1500rpms depending on track prep and i guess DA too..

What works for me is putting the car in the sport mode. Then shutting off both the traction control and stabilitrak. I bring the car up to 1100 rpm then nail it when its time to go. The last time out on drag radials the called pulled a 60' time of 1.60 - 1.65 every single time. Next time I go I'm going to try and stall it up a bit.

What drag radial & rim setup are you using?

I think I got my best time by spinning away from the water first to clean the tires, 21 psi in the stock tires, and maybe the traction control on (not sure). My second best time was with the traction control and the a/c on by accident.

I'm still having a lot of trouble with hooking up but chiping second with the traction control off sure is thilling !

Sport mode,TC off, foot brake it at the tree, flash up to what you feel comfortable with ( I flash until I feel the nose dive a little, raises the back up a bit to aid in launch), and leave on last yellow( you won't red light, you're not that quick). With stock tires, you'll spin, but it should stay pretty straight, on DRs, be ready for a little whiplash, lol. I wouldn't recommend just stabbing the throttle without some flash, puts alot of stress on the drivetrain, flashing takes up some of the slack and reduces wheel hop and chance of snapping axel. The good A6 guys on Vette forums have mastered launching like this, may be worth it to read up on some of their techniques. Oh, BTW, don't paddle shift..it'll slow you down..the computer is faster than all of us...

PS...if you do a burnout, drive by the waterbox and back just your rears into it, don't forget to put it back into drive/sport mode...seen too many guys look silly launching in reverse...lol...

Bumblbee,
I have the 275/45/18 M & H racemaster drag radials on an 18" Z06 wheel. The only time out so far I had them at 17.5 psi and the track temp was around 60. I'm going to a T and T tommorrow and I'm going to try 15 psi and the prep should be better. I'll keep you posted.
