Header question

I understand from the forums that many people have gotten O2 sensor codes
after installing long tube headers (with and without cats). Has anyone installed long tube headers on an M6 (LS3) without having check engine coming on (O2 sensor). IOf so, what brand and where did you get them from.
Thanks for the info.

Any header system that moves, or replaces that cats runs the risk of throwing a code. Basically on each exhaust pipe you have a pre cat O2 sensor, and a post cat O2 sensor. The pre cat one reads the exhaust temp going in the cat, the post cat one reads the temp coming out that cat. The computer then compares the two readings and decides if the cat is operating right. Whenever you move a cat, or replace a cat with a high flow one, you run the risk of getting a code because it changes the readings you O2 sensors see. Moving the cats further back like most LT systems do loweres the exhaust temp readings at the cat. Additionally, any high flow cat is gonna flow in a way your cars computer with stock tuning would not like. Only one that would be 100% sure not to throw a code, would be JBA's through the stock catted mids. That being said..most codes are fixed with a tune..though people here seem sensitive warranty wise with that.

If the cats are removed, does this affect how the car will run, I was not sure if it would mess with the computer.

Idleing the car with LTs and High flow cats increases the chances of setting the code.

I am not saying it won't set but it helps if you start and drive right away to get the temps up fast.

I am in the process of deciding which set of headers/exhaust to get. I know many have had coding problems which I want to avoid. I was hoping to hear from people who have LT's on their car and not have any coding problems, Thanks for the help so far.

As Far As setting Cat Efficiency codes I don't think that Any Brand Headers is better or worse in this department.

As temps get colder the Problem will be worse, it has to do with how long the cats take to get up to operating temperature.

Like I said if you get in and go you might never get codes, but if you let your car idle or get stuck in traffic you probably will get codes.

Ceramic Coating Headers will improve the Heat retention and reduce the code factor.

Ted.

Can long tube headers work with a cat back system, I wanted to know because I was thinking of getting a cat back system for now and next year when the weather gets nice, I want to add headers.

My buddy Tim (TNT Performance) put ARH on his M6 car and got codes immediately.
We put the SLP LT (1 ¾ primary) on my A6 car and the code did not happen till after a day or two driving.
…for what its worth
We both had the codes tuned out.

Yes you can use them with a cat-back. I recommend the ARH Long-tubes and they have a version which is made to use with aftermarket cat-back systems.

I personally have ARH on my car, and have sold dozens of sets of them, each person has been very happy with them. If you tune the car to get the most out of the install, you will have no code problems.
