Camaro RS as opposed to...

So I saw an add for an '01 Camaro RS, heres a cpl pics:

Features: ABS, Air Conditioning, Alloy Wheels, AM/FM Radio, CD Player, Cruise Control, Driver-Side Airbag, Leather Interior, **Low Mileage**, Passenger-Side AirBag, Power Locks, Power Mirrors, Power Seats, Power Steering, Power Windows, Remote Keyless Entry, Tilt Wheel T-TOPS
Standard Equipment: Pass key Security System, Air Conditioning, 16 inch Rim Size, Power Brakes, Power Steering, Dual front air bags/active belts, AM/FM Cassette, 231 Cubic Inch Displacement, Daytime Running Lights, Tilt Wheel, 4 wheel standard Anti-lock Brakes, 6 Cylinders

Mileage: 58,136
Body Style: Coupe
Exterior Color: Red
Interior Color: black

Engine: 6 Cylinders
Transmission: automatic
Drivetrain: RWD
Doors: 2

first of all, does this sound legit?.. is this really an "RS" or is it a base, badged as an RS with painted on stripes?..

Second..my car is failing more & more day after day. (Ford Taurus, go figure)
And previously I had spoken to my mom about her helping me get a camaro, and she seemed, slightly optimistic. Main thing is.. I wanted it to be white..or black..not red =/, but this one in particular has great milage on it, and its only 8,800.

Third: what makes an RS unique from the base camaro? besides just the stripes...I know its supposed to be an "Appearance" package..for this particular gen camaro, but I don't see anything besides the stripes (which I dont really care for anyway)
It's the seemingly best camaro in my area thats listed...but again i didn't want it red, and dont want the stripes..
I'd be getting this car for daily activities (work/school etc) if I were to get it..
eventually I want a 5th gen but it'll probably be quite a few years before I can even get one.
any suggestions?/thoughts?.. would be much appreciated.
Our taurus is currently in the shop for the 3rd time since we got our "New" transmission. and my mom is getting literally FED UP.
I think this may be a good time to try to go for a 4th gen...
as for it being "T-Tops" do those really deteriorate as badly as I'm assuming?..
those rather turn me off, they're cool, but..I'd rather not go for it if they are as big of as hassle as they seem...

I honestly have never even Seen a 4th gen RS on the road, nor have I heard much of any information regarding it.

anyway thanks in advance for any advice =)

Looks Legit to me...

All About The 2001 Camaro RS (SC w/ V6) [SLP]

Option No. Y3B identified the Camaro RS Package created by SLP Engineering for the 2001 V6 Camaro coupe. You could order this package by spending an additional $849 which was available for V6 equipped base coupe and t-top base coupe models (N/A with convertibles).

Standard features of the new RS package included a grille with a Chevrolet bow tie logo, one special interior plaque and three "RS" exterior badges and a dual outlet exhaust system with a high-performance muffler that added 5 hp and a more "throaty" exhaust note.

The RS was available on Arctic White, Light Pewter Metallic, Navy Blue Metallic, Onyx Black, Monterey Maroon Metallic, Sunset Orange Metallic, Mystic Teal Metallic and Bright Rally Red cars. The RS dual stripe package could be ordered in black for cars with exterior colors other than Navy Blue or Black or in silver with body colors other than Light Pewter or Sunset Orange.

You could not team the RS package with convertibles, the WU8 Camaro SS Package, the Z28 Special Performance package, the Y3F Camaro ground effects package, the Y87 performance enhancement package or the MM5 5-speed manual transmission in California or Florida. 6-speed manual not available.

Optional equipment for the Camaro RS included 16 x 8-in. SS-style wheels and a suspension package that used standard V8 front (32mm) and rear (19mm) anti-sway bars.

Because this was a feature only available on the Base Coupe only, the 5-spd manual w/ overdrive was standard. 4-speed automatic was optional. 6-speed manual not available.

ahh, if that had the LLT v6!!!
I am not sure if all the RS's had the ground effects in '01. But it looks good. I would trade my 99 S-10 for it.....

Someone on here should be able to confirm the RS authenticity.

and it looks like they did, while I was typing (too slow)
were the ground effects really not RS? how about 02?

you'll have to check the rpo codes to verify that it is truely an RS, it should be Y3B for that year. its not much of a package, but you might get lucky and it have the Y87 code for the Performance Handling Package (L36 V6 Only) which basically has the Z28 suspension and sway bars.

where are you at? btw? even with that low mileage, you could prolly find a better deal.

A good site to find cars is http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites.html you click where you live then what you are looking for i.e. cars, trucks section. its like classifieds on the internet. it's where I got my camaro.

sounds legit to me. Why don't you get the vin and have your local chevy dealer run it to see what kind of repairs it's had...and if it was in fact an RS. They shouldn't have a problem doing it as I've had it done before too.

But, not bad mileage. PM SilverTurtle and run it by him. He's pretty knowledgeable about them. Sounds like Spikes got some pretty good info too.

The pics have the right badges, but ALL of the RS Camaros I saw around from 98-02 had body kits on them. Of course that was all over the southeast, but ALL OF THEM had THE SAME body kit. I'd be a little suspicious that this one didn't come with a body kit. Just things I'd noticed back then.

Good Luck!

Tim

Where's the body kit? My buddy's RS has a body kit.

Assuming that some came without the kit, everything else looks fine, so I'd consider it.

Are you sure you can't wait 3 months to place an order for a 2010 Camaro RS? It's going to have a lot more power.

It's not whether I can wait or not..It's whether I can Afford it or not.
I'm currently going to college (18 month straight program) Criminal Justice major; I have a job working Security, making only $8.50 an hour (that will soon increase to about $9.25 I believe), and increase again to approx. $9.50 or $9.75 once I get my firearms permit.
Never been stopped by the cops (not once) - even tho I drive a little..harsh...
I don't break the law or anything I just don't drive a 10 out of 10. I'd say 7 out of 10, Aggressive Defensive (as someone said) However, I Can drive 10 out of 10 - If my mom is in the car...Lol.
I look forward to eventually being a Highway Patrol (as stated in my sig.), which will make me some pretty decent $$.
But until I get that job, I doubt I'll be able to afford the new camaro - even tho I want it Very very badly.
Patience isn't Necessarily the issue here..it's more the cost of the new camaro, and the insurance, and responsibility, of owning one.

If cost wasn't the issue, you bet your ass I'd have one just like in my sig.

I've considered that proposed I4 turbo, knowing it'd lack a lot of power..but also realizing I could drive it 24/7...
My mom's Taurus has rather scared me away from V6's...that thing eats up gas like CRAZY...even tho 300 HP sounds freakin awesome - I'm worried about shelling out 40 bucks every 2 & a half days (she likes to keep the tank Over half full, I dunno why, but whatever, its her money).
we've rented a cobalt for about 2 months now and its real steady on gas consumption.
I'm thinking it's just cuz its a ford, and its 10 years old..I realize that there's been a lot of enhancements in gas consumption (especially from GM), but I'm still hesitant to get a V6 because the taurus is all I've ever driven.
our taurus is crapping out on us (its given a new meaning to Fix or Repair Daily), we've literally had to send it BACK to the ford dealership the day After, or 2 days after they "repaired" it. and no I'm definitely Not exaggerating.
But as I said, I hope to one day have the car that's in my sig.

I could however, afford a 4th gen V6 camaro, which is why I'm kinda on the look out..

turned out this particular camaro, was like, almost immaculate on the outside, and just trash on the inside.
the leather was super dry/cracked, the steering wheel looked bad...
there were quite a few parts that were missing/cracked/broken.
ugh. I could go on...
Funniest part of the experience - the guy I was talking to said "I don't know why it hasn't sold yet"...

unfortunately for me, my mother said "i ain't buyin you no camaro"...
she didn't say no cobalt tho
any ideas as to how to persuade her otherwise?.
I hella want one and we need 2 cars real bad atm. (don't want This particular camaro tho )

I never thought I'd say that about a camaro but g/d it looked bad.
I didn't even wanna start it to see what it sounded like...
doesn't look bad at all in the pix, but O M G it was hideous.
