2011 Camaro Z28 v6 turbo vs superchared v8

So many of you all have seen j's commenting on the concept camaro twin turbo v6 as runner up for new z28. Although is sounds like a very good idea, I have mixed feeling about the new z28 to have a v6! first of all I've always wanted the z28 to be a gt500 fighter, and have over 550 hp, however this v6 twin turbo sounds very appealing, manly because of reduced body weight better handling, good flue economy and possibly cheaper price tag. It would be awesome to be able to odder the new z28 with a LSA or the twin turbo v6, however do to cost issues that may not be possible.

We have to move forward. If they one day make a 4-cylinder that can outperform my V8, I would rather have that.

#1...we need to get over the 6 v. 8 stigma...it's silly.
#2...we need to spell-check before we submit a poll....

and #3,

We need to temper our assumptions on what the Z/28's powertrain will be....the bottom line is it will be kickass, whatever they plan to do. Look at it from this perspective.

They've NEVER worked with a IRS Camaro before...never been able to have this much "fun" building a vehicle. And on their very FIRST try, in the very FIRST year of this revolutionary Camaro -- they gave us a monster that can accelerate to 60 in 4.6 seconds, cover the quarter in 12.8 seconds, and pull over .9 gs in handling....ALL while providing a Buick-level ride comfort, road-noise levels unheard of in a Camaro, seating comfort you may expect in a touring sedan even though it'll hold you steady, fuel-efficiency you might expect out of a small car, a host of standard features (including Brembo brakes), and a price that seems impossible for a business to justify.

Yet they did it!!!

And the Z/28 is basically a Camaro with many constraints lifted, because it's not intended to be sold in mass volume like the 6, or even the SS. So set a price ceiling, and use your imaginations...

It will KICK ASS. And it'll look good doing it. Enjoy the ride, and let the engineer types figure out how to get there.

true. however its really hard to beat the sound that the v8 makes, nonetheless its all about how makes it the the finish line first.

If these company's do away with the V8 as the top dog they would have one less customer. And dont give me crap about owning a Mustang because I am game for anything American as long as it appeal's too me.

I feel that the twin turbo V6 with the weight savings and handling package of Jay Leno's car would be the perfect Z28. That is what the original Z28 was. It was a lightweight car built to handle like it was on rains, and it has a smaller displacement engine than the "Big Boys" but would rev high and nearly make "big boy" power. The Leno car would be true to the original Z28.
As far as the 550horsepower cobra killer, I feel that it should be called the ZL1. The original ZL1 was the ultimate Camaro with insane power, a relatively high price tag and low volume. Making these 2 cars would pay homage to the past, but thats just my 2 cents. What do you guys think?

Just curious about what you think will make this car lighter? Adding a turbo, intercooler, piping and a beefed up suspension is going to add quite a bit of weight...... There is roughly only a 70 pound difference between a LS and a 1SS

I LOVE Leno's TT V6, but it seems to me that a new Z28 ought to have significantly more power than the SS, not just squeeze SS-level power from a V6.

how many polls are we going to have on the Z's powertrain? I mean seriously. hell why does it have to have FI? because that's the only way to make power? well we'll see what it is when they decide to talk about it finally. but I'm not voting on this poll. It doesn't cover an NA appication. and it could be NA.

By 2016 all cars produced need to meet the new government fuel mileage requirements. My guess is we will see a V6 turbo being the new Z28 by then. Who knows I would love to rock a v8 z28 but it being 2010 and all with 6 years to go, GM needs to make some changes.

being scared of a little boost or thinking we don't need it to get the performance we need. . .I want to see the DI engine. I want to know specs on it and then I can tell you if the FI is even worth it in my eyes. give me 500+ DI where I can upgrade it to FI later on.

Thanks for pointing that out
Lightest Camaro V6 is 3728lbs The SS is 3849lbs
so at most 121lbs less + turbo's , pipes and IC ...

So the only advantage is High MPG , whooo
Thats should seel the deal LSA and have us a GT500 fighter !

Now IF the V6 could be 200-300 lbs LESS than a SS and have alot of HP head-room we might have something .

And how much of that do the 4-pot (times four...) Brembos cost? How much more do the rest of the SS chassis improvements cost? It goes on and on...

Grr... Consider starting with a 500 horse' D.I. 6.2. Then, consider adding 6-8 psi of boost through your TVS 2300, Whipple/KB, or Procharger/Vortech and think where RWHP will be... 575 - 600 RWHP with little worry or durability?...

Um - I'm with stupid (j/k - about the stupid-thing). Exactly. Right now, for what we know, this is what I'm thinking. Show me something else, and I'll reconsider. Still, I'm sure we're still a few years away; a lot can happen by then

The 35mpg requirement for 2016 is a fleet average. So Chevy can have many cars over, and some under. That being said by 2016 the gas guzzler tax will probably be appled to vehicles with 30 or less mpg.

Oh, and I voted V6 turbo.

They could start by losing the 20" wheels. Carbon Fiber or composite hood, trunklind, maybe doors. Have a smaller stereo setup. Lose the foglights. There are alot of places where they could save a little weight here and there and it would really add up. It dosen't even have to be that much lighter. Just develop a trackpack for the car to make it handle better.
And why are you comparing it to the SS? The Z28 was a roadcourse screamer, the SS was a dragstrip car, and the ZL1 was just a total beast.
