2011 vs. 2012 Boston Acoustics review

As I just posted went from a 2011 2LTRS to a 2SS45th. As I have only a few days under my belt with the 2012 I want to get your feedback on the BA systems. My 2011 I did a complete replacement. Been in the business for 20 years. A couple of points between the two:

1. They corrected the center speaker level and tone. In my 2011 the cent speaker was way too loud and sounded hollow. In the 12 I had to put my ear right on top of the speaker to make sure it was on and was not near as annoying.
2. The overall tamber and tone is much better. No doubt some EQing has been done to the overall sound.
3. The image still pull a bit to the back...A couple of click with the fader to the front helps really help. Or you can use the subthump rear tweeter bybasses.
4. Time Alignment seems better..I know BA uses a Digital amp with onboard DSP...However it is NOT set for the driver, IMO it is set for the driver AND passanger in the middle. I wish BA would have put the TA user selectable. Bummer.
5. Still almost no sound 80Hz and down...cannot live with a sub in this system IMO.

Overall, It is improved to the point that a 10 or 12 inch sub added and the system would get a C+ B- rating. No...It will not win IASCA events..but it is a move in the right direction. Please give me your feedback.

I have a 2010 2ss and the sound doesn't seem as good as it should.
I had a panel in the passenger door loose, waiting to be fixed, the quality is just no where as expected, I'm just waiting to have spare money to get a better one...

I'm personally tired of the rear woofers causing something to vibrate horribly when I listen to music with bass at volume 14... When it gets warm out, I'm going to loop a bass test track and find out what is vibrating...

Sorry to hear that you guys are having trouble. I had zero issues with both my camaros so far. I guess I was looking for feedback from the stereo guys what they did/or didnt do to get good sound.

I have a 2010 2SS/RS and I love my BA stereo system. I have a friend with a 2011 Ford Mustang GT with the Shaker 1000 and my BA blows it out of the water as far as sound quality and volume.

I put some squares of Dynamat Extreme on that underside of the panel today and it seems to have helped

Interesting Review. I too am going from a 2LT 2011 to a 2012 2SS. I am interested in hearing the difference as well. It maybe different anyway because I have had my center speaker disconnected.

All I know is that it's not worth the change that they charge for it.

Interesting. I didn't know they changed the Ba system. I did the center speaker disconnect and I think it sounds better. There's really no need for a fake center channel speaker in this system.

I have a 2010 and while I think the system is ok, the rattle is so bloody annoying. I plan on turning the bass real low on the speakers once the sub goes in.

Don't have any reference to previous versions, but the BA in my 2012 sounds fantastic with the proper e.q. applied. (I'm happy as long as my Rush collection sound good...)

As for no sound 80Hz down, are you kidding? That adjustment is under your right foot!

Same here. I get great sound while I am driving, so no complaints from me.

I chose the Boston system as I knew that the dash design could make things difficult for aftermarket. I'm fairly satisfied with the highs but could use a subwoofer. Like many others, the music induced rattle drives me nuts.

My '12 BA sounds pretty good. Much better than a '10 with the lower output amp.

The center speaker doesn't seem as overpowering.

I've got my EQ at 3 1 3 fade at zero, and CDs sound pretty decent around 20-25ish volume. When tinkering with the fader, the front sounds real good, the rear not so much. Just doesn't seem like the rear speakers are not doing much.

Some more rear bass and I think the '12 BA would sound great.

If I added something now, I'd want to keep the front the way it is and add bass to the rear. Maybe the GM accessory MTX kit would sound really good in a '12?

I am running my eq at 1T 0M 2B right now. 2+ front fader. It is good as long as you dont push it too hard. Also, I think it sounds better with jazz, acoustic and classical than rock with a subwoofer. I think if you put a sub around 100hz xover the system will be good enough I do not have to replace it.

I read a lot about the BA system lacking in the '10's and '11's, but I'm pretty impressed with it in my '12. I hooked up a 10" sub and, after some tweaking, have it sounding really good. My only complaint is the rattle from the rear speakers with lower bass tones, but I think I've corrected that by just adding some thin strips of foam in between the rear speakers and the metal panel they rest on. Haven't noticed it since.

In point 5, did you mean cannot live without a sub?

I'm thinking of adding just a sub/sub amp to mine.

I'm looking for options that would leave the front as is, and just bring more power and bass to the back. I'm not sure why the back speakers don't sound like they are doing much.

For a '12 BA do you think the GM accessory MTX sub kit would really sound good? Does it just add bass, or improve the overall sound from the rear along with the bass.

Or maybe aftermarket, but some of the aftermarket subs/amp kits I've seen eliminate the front center channel, which I'm thinking I want to leave the front alone.

My 2 cents, I wished that Chevy would have used Bose, I have a 03 Avalanche, and a 12 GMC Acadia, both with Bose systems, IMO, the sound is far better than that of my 10 Camaro with BA sound.

Uh, duh. It's Bose.

My 2010 had a okay sounding BA system compared to the one in my Jeep. The BA system in my jeep sounds 10 times better then the one i had in the camaro.

this is caused by the rear deck, it is a single pretty much flat piece of sheet metal. the best way to correct this is to add a layer of Dynamat to the under side. then add a layer of MDF or plywood on top of that. Use self cutting screws to fasten the wood to the deck. 1/2 inch and 1 1/4 screws . the retainer clips will prevent you from getting the wood flat to the deck so you will need to make holes for them.. No need to over tighten the screws you will deform the deck.

As for the 12 BA system.. yes it is fine for mom.. but no where near what it should be for the cash we payed for it. I have had my 12 for 3 months and at this very moment it is in pieces while I give it a real sound system.

And to the guy that talked about the dash being a pain in the ass. I will be using the factory head unit (radio) for starters. after I am done with the amp and speakers. if the head unit has any distortion.. I will rip that out too..

There is no substitute for quality sound..

I just put 2 10" Fosgate Punch phase 2 subs in the back. They are overkill IMHO. I dip the bass levels down a bit and the treble up a bit. It sounds great. It doesn't take much to fill in where the factory system lacks. I don't want massive thumping bass, but I do expect my kicks to be crisp and the bass to be noticeable and clean.

BTW, it was the fastest amp/subs install I've ever done. I can't believe OEMs didn't start putting the battery in the back until recently. I finished my install before my wife finished her meatloaf... with time for a beer to relax!
