Thumbs down Is My Sales Person Lying To Me?

Hi Everyone,...

I've been speaking to several different salesmen from different dealers and this one guy told me that there is No Such Thing as a "Dealer Price".

The "Dealer Invoice" is the Price that the Dealers pays for the vehicle when they purchase them.

So is there such a thing as a Dealer Price vs. Dealer Invoice?

BTW if your a VET and have been in the Armed Services and plan on buying a new vehicle, Go the the USAA (United Services Automobile Association) website and sign up with them for Free, You'll get $750 off the Dealer MSRP Price, what ever that price may be if you can get them to truely tell you what the MSRP price is.

Thanks for your help.

Dealer invoice makes the dealer about $1400 bucks on the backside. It's probably the best you'll do on one though. I love how some dealers say "I'm selling it to you at cost". They must live in a cardboard box & eat roadkill. At least now they'll have a health care option!!

This varies wildly from car to car. On higher end SUV's this is over $2k but on the Camaro SS it is just a couple hundred.

As for Dealers Price, I've seen quite a few call Invoice, Dealers Price and I've seen some refer to the price dealers paid after hold back (which is the true dealers cost) as Dealers Price.

We don't want to call anyone a liar... However

DEALER'S ACTUAL COST

On this forum we've got access to some pretty slick spreadsheets quoting options pricing, supplier pricing, and dealer invoice pricing, etc. etc., but I don't see any mention of the most important pricing, and that is the "DEALER'S ACTUAL INVOICE".

"The Dealer Invoice" that they will show you is called "Invoice Price"...
But "Invoice Price" is not the the same as the "DEALER'S ACTUAL INVOICE", which is what he really paid GM for the vehicle!

So now that we have that straight, there's many other sources of Dealers Profits, here's just a few...

The "HOLD BACK" (some call it a "Spiff") is an additional 3% of the MSRP that is given back to the Dealer by GM after the sale of each & every vehicle sold... Kind of a Kick Back....

or how about Charging you for the Wash & Wax or Paint Sealant (ADM)...

or Charging you to Scotch Guard the seats (on LEATHER? huh?) (ADM)...

or "Filling Fees" to register your vehicle with the state dmv (ADM).
this paperwork usually goes to your the local courthouse and then it's sent from there off to the state. So how can the dealer charge you / me / us $189 (I've seen this amount at more than 1 dealership) for a .44 cent stamp!

So, from Actual Dealer Cost to MSRP Sticker / Plus the assorted "Spiffs" and Market Adjustments or Additional Dealer Margins (ADM) that the Dealer receives, it's not just a couple of hundred dollars profit per car like they'd want us all to believe.

ALL of these DOLLARS add up to some pretty hefty Profit Amounts that goes directly into the Dealer / Owners Pockets, and not ours.

And Yet we still have to fight for every nickle of discount or incentive that we "might get", even though most of it is GM Sponsored Monies, and not the Dealers!

So NO, I don't believe them when they say there is no profit in selling cars @ MSRP, or god forbid "under".

Think of this... Do you really believe that these Taj Mahal Dealerships / Facilities could be built and maintained if the margins were so tight at "only a few hundred dollars per car"?

I call BS!

Jim,
Don't confuse the dealers cost with MSRP. The MSRP is printed on the window (Monrooney) sticker. It is the "Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price". The dealers cost is something less so the dealer can make a profit.

It does not really matter much what the dealers cost is on a new Camaro. They can sell them at sticker price (MSRP) faster than they can get the factory to build them so why should they discount much below that? Some dealers are going to try to mark it up above the sticker price but you should try to avoid them if you can.

-Mark.

Dealer price, for the dealer there is the price. It's called the "Black Book" if you have any friends in the auto arena they can get you what the dealer price is.

WI states a dealership must disclose costs for "services" previously built into the cost of the car. They can be as high as $499 - we charge $129

WI also require us to retain 7 years of sales documents - for us that is about 50-60 bankers boxes of papers....we have no room at the dealership, so they are in "Secure storage" with a "document retention storage service".
