GM Performance Division???

now that it's gone. Do you think they will still make the Z28. I know they are pushing forward with the cts-v coupe but what's in store for GM performance cars?

Performance division is closed. Doesn't mean GM still can't build performance cars.

It actually was right before they received the bail-out money to keep the liberal tree huggers happy. The GM Performance Division members are working with other teams within GM. Once the company goes public and pays back the loans I'm sure GMPD will be back together. Either we will have the Z28.

They are still very active, look at all the new high HP crate engines that recently were released.

I'm suprised about this because I thought these programs would've been the first to be cut. I think they're hugely valuable and know that GM invented the crate engine but it almost seemed like this program would've gone the way of GMPP. Whatever the case, it's good for all of us and the rest of the GM faithful.

they don't hide them any more. it's just labled Black projects. lol. it's just the goverment over pays for so much stuff. seriously some of the screws I've ordered are like 30$ ea. wth? and there's nothing really special about them.

BUT skunk works is the best way to develop something. a hand shake on what you want and the team gives you more then you want. IE p-38 had several advanced tech that the goverment didn't ask for but gave the plane an edge.

Eh, yeah i agree with the general concensus here, GM might not have any set in stone performance division anymore (ive got a GM performance division for you, it was called Pontiac, LOL!) but they obviously still make nice high performance cars and still develope some great performance parts and such...the Z/28 will definatly be seen, right now the Camaro is the flagship car for GM (yeah i'll go out on that limb, i think the Camaro is what draws most costumers into the showrooms, whether they leave with a Camaro or not id still say the Camaro is what draws in a lot of GM's sales) its just an amazing marketing tool, and the Z/28 is obviously the next step there, everyone wants the Z/28 so why not build one? Even if you dont sell tons of them (which i definatly believe they could) i still think itd be too good of a marketing tool for them too pass up, the Z/28 would pull even more people into the showrooms =)

The performance division was an engineering team. More on that later

As far as I know, the SS is just a regular car developed by a regular team. The SS and LS/LT were designed together, while cars from the performance division have a bunch of performance parts bolted on to a regular car then made to work together. The cars are an afterthought.

Its a matter of timing. More on that too.

Very true

When the Z28 was first put on hold, GM knew how they were going to do the car. The program was shelved before the team was disbanded and sent to work in other areas. GM probably had a number of working prototypes as well. But what they didn't have were all the nuts and bolts of the car figured out, long term durability testing, or the manufacturing contracts. Most of the remaining work was essentially run of the mill stuff, hardly different from what engineers working on the LaCrosse or Terrain had to do. Only major difference would probably be going to tracks like the Nurburgring to sort out the handling.
