Functional Side Gills?
Anyone working on these or have any ready to order?
I think having the 3 gills open to "cool" the rear tires would be awesome.

It's not worth the expense and potential for rust later.
The first generation did not have functional gills either.

If hollow channels "gill ducts" were fitted between the open gills and the wheel well to keep water/air/dust flowing through into the wheel well there would be now worry for rusting since nothing would get into the frame. I drew up a sketch real quick and took a photo on my iPhone (kinda crap quality)
I understand the older generations did not have open gills, but I want to get past that and see something new. I have respect for history but new ideas are the only way we'll ever progress (not claiming this idea as knew or even mine).

Functional brake ducting through these ports would add some "wow" factor, but it's not a high pressure area, so I don't think you'd get much air flow there anyhow.
You want to grab air off a more forward-facing surface - maybe from underneath (though that's not much to look at, is it?) How about pulling air through the foglamp openings and directing it at the front brakes. That's been done before - fair amount of information online about that sort of thing. |

I would spend the effort cooling the front brakes first. The best way to go for the back is a complete insert that you would open up a single hole and then the insert would be pushed through. I have been under a ton of exotics and the trick is to have the outlet of the vent blowing on the lead side of the rotor (area just before the caliper) Just opening a vent throwing air into the wheel well will do nothing. I did front and rear ducts on my STi and it worked great at auto-x and when I did some hard backroads driving. Kept the fluid in the calipers from possibly boiling and really eliminated brake fade. Unless your gonna do some hard driving like twisties or AutoX I doubt it will do anything at all.

I wouldn't mind if this gave absolutely no performance enhancement at all. If one wanted, they could take this and run all the way with it to give it performance enhancement. I drive like a regular guy on his way to work, occasionally downshifting to power past the next guy, I'm not concerned with the possible enhancments at the moment. I would like to have this done because it would just look damn cool. I'm sure lots of folks will walk up and complement it. I just think this would be an awesome looking alternative to the closed up gills. The gill ducts would be more for keeping crap from flying into the the body panel and getting on the frame. If anyone wants to run with this idea feel free. I'm a virologist working in a research lab so I dont have the tools or the time to get something like this produced. (;

Good luck, but I don't think the effort is worth it.. it would be very expensive to do as you show, and I am not even sure with the inside structure of that area would even allow for something like that.
But if that is what you want to do then go for it...

Its been done before. Anyone have an idea of the cost of having this done? I think this would be sweet if maybe a slotted cover can go over this or inside to give the image of gills.
