Thumbs up AVATAR

Any one else looking forward to this movie?

http://www.avatarmovie.com/

James Cameron is genius and this film looks outstanding visually. Plus he has had a long time to tweak the storyline...I think it will prove to be his crowning achievement, even beyond Titanic.

...or maybe I'm just a Sci-Fi geek marking out because of the hype!

Dude this movie is gonna be SWEET!!! I can't wait to see it in IMAX 3-D. I don't know anything about James Cameron (Not big into knowing famous peoples names or accomplishments) and I didn't see Titanic but I know this movie is gonna be absolute insanity!!!!

James Cameron brought us the Terminator Franchise, the Alien franchise, True Lies, and we geeks will forgive him for Titanic since it allowed him to have the freedom to slowly work out his dream of AVATAR.

I've heard the storyline is a rip-off of Dances With Wolves.

South Park even parodied it as such.

Yeah he started working on the original story in the late '70's, prior to him writing Alien and Terminator.

He just didn't have the technology to make it the way he envisioned until now. (I'm not a mind-reader or a close personal friend...He was on 60 minutes recently discussing this!)

So Dances With Wolves just happened to be identical to Mr Cameron's story that wasn't released yet?

I might hit up the IMAX for the Midnight Showing...I'm hyped about it...but don't think (IMO) that it's midnight worthy...

Indentical? Are you basing this assumption on what you've heard and a South Park parody?

It may have some similar themes...the way Star Wars had similar themes to various mythologies and movie influences of George Lucas, but identical...

I'm too old for midnight!

I'm more likely to wait for the Sunday matinee!

But I do want to see the 3D IMAX version.

Correction: Cameron did not bring us the Alien Franchise, he only wrote and directed the second one. Ridley Scott directed the Original in 1979 and David Fincher directed the third in 1992.

I may or may not be a bit of a geek myself

The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former U.S. Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms, some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Na’vi, a sentient humanoid race, who are considered primitive, yet are more physically capable than humans. Standing three meters tall (approximately 10 feet), with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Na’vi live in harmony with their unspoiled world. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake will be able to walk again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Na’vi female, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña).

Over time, Jake integrates himself into the Na'vi clan, and begins to fall in love with Neytiri. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth and the Na’vi, forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of Pandora forever.

It looks interesting, but I'm going to wait to hear the buzz. I'm not prepared to drop 75 to take my family to that in IMAX quite yet.

It has been in waiting for a long time. Money and technology. Its true all his other films are utilized to fund it and he had to wait. Luc Besson went the same way back for the Fifth Element. Part of doing all his other films was to fund a the 5th element. You have to have a big bank account, connections and some bravado to get bug movies off the ground. Supposedly the 3d is flawless and done in a natural depth perception way and no "3D cheese shots"

Gee, that plotline sounds familiar.....

I really thought Cameron was above stealing someone else's storyline.

Beyond the storyline itself...The 3D aspect is supposed to be a game changer as far as movie making goes, with a true depth perception...3D has been hokey and gimicky for 30+ years...this is supposed to change that.

Brandotron: accept and embrace your geekiness

Can't wait to see this in 3D. Saw Nightmare Before Christmas in the new 3D and it was great, very nicely done. No gimmicky stuff or anything, just added depth to the original masterpiece.
