Low Avaliability Charge

So Ive been shopping around for a Camaro. I came across a dealer in the area who told me that the College Grad Program didn't apply to the Camaro. I informed him that I had talked with numerous dealers who sad that it did, and they told me that they hoped they could earn my business on my next purchase. WOW! They then e-mailed me and said they had been mis-informed and that it did apply and i could take $1000 off the price they quoted me. $34,444. The sticker price on the car is 30,954. I asked for a price breakdown and this is what they gave me.

MSRP is 30,954
+1,000 Low availability charge
-1,000 College Grad Discount
- 750 USAA Discount
+2,325 Tax, title, lic, fees, & registration
total finaced= $32,520.36

I told them to keep the car. I'd be buying somewhere else!

Question: I have had no other dealer mention anything about a low availibility charge, and this dealership has 22 Camaros on their lot. Is that a bogus charge and jsut their way of getting making me think I'm getting the grad discount, but not really?

There are lots of respectable dealers on this site that will give you MSRP. And no, there should be no "Low Availability Charge".

Talk to Scotty (CamaroScotty) or Anna (lilbankrobber). Both are BELOW MSRP- as are the dealers in my area...

"Low availability" charge?

There are over 100 just on 4 lots in the Buffalo,NY area.

There are many dealers here that don't have "low availability charges". Good for you for not taking that "offer".

Or you could talk to this guy- seems pretty reputable IMO and I'm a pretty good judge of character I like to think.

Thanks for validating my thoughts. I found a dealer that has a summit white 2LT RS auto, compact spare tire, and 20" polished aluminum wheels and he quoted me $29,203.06 before the USAA discount. I'm thinking thats a pretty good deal. Any thoughts?

IMO, prior to any discounts you may be eligible for (USAA, student, military, $500 "I won't bring it back", etc) any dealer should be able to give you a minimum of $1000 off MSRP without even flinching; $1300 is interesting; $1500 or more is where you consider pulling out your pen. I was told there was an ad here in the local paper showing $3500 off MSRP on an SS Camaro (including all applicable discounts) but I didn't see it so I can't confirm it. Just my .02

Thought-> what's the sticker on the car? It would appear that's $1677 off MSRP which really isn't too shabby on a 2LT... or is it $1177 +$500 you won't bring it back discount?

I am surprised he didn't charge you a "Multiple Fee Fee".

Also check with BeckyD@RodgersChevrolet on these forums. She has an excellent reputation on these forums. She even helped me get info about my car even though I didn't buy it from her. She's a gem.

It's the old "We mark em up so we can mark em down" scam...Purely a BS charge..

Start at MSRP and work from there. Ask what they will come off of MSRP, Then ask about the Discounts, USAA, Supplier, Employee, etc....Also don't always trust their finance person to figure the correct TT&L fees.. sometimes dealers that like to do add-ons add their own little fee in there for taking care of that for you...And beware of their DOC fee.. some are cheaper than others and some don't charge any at all...
Good luck Car Shopping!

A lot of dealers are adding the low availability charge. When I first called a dealer they told me they were charging $2,500 on top of MSRP for the Camaros! The only way to get one at MSRP with no additional markup was to order one. That's still the case in Southern California (based on my research). Now I have to wait until the end of February to get mine!!!

for 2500 dollers I would fly to one of the dealers selling for below MSRP and drive it home

That's a great idea! Actually, we searched for a Summit White SS (manual) with black leather interior and could not find any. Most of the white camaros out are automatic and have orange interior. Regardless, most dealers are gouging their customers, making up for the money they did not make over the past year!

I love how they added a markup that matches exactly the discount they initially said you couldn't have. Effectively making the discount disappear.

They obviously didn't factor in that you really were a college graduate and could analyze, add, and subtract. Good for you! That was a most underhanded and poorly disguised insult of a deal.

Bwaahahahahhaha, a 'LOW AVAILABILITY' charge.

Now I've heard everything! LOL

Many of us good dealers here offer GREAT pricing. You should contact one of us.

In the last month I've had customers buy Camaros from WY, FL, TX, NC, and NY. It was less expensive for these customers to buy from me and either have the car shipped or fly in and pick it up.
