New member, with a Cobra, joining for a good reason.

Hey guys, I joined last night. I'm here because my uncle bought a ss/rs m6. He's new to the modern performance car world, I'm not though. I enjoy talking cars with him and I would like to be even more upbeat on his car than I already am. The other reason I joined is he has started using a local tuner to do a couple things for him, along with some tuning, and I feel that he is being misinformed for the sake of making a sale. I know sites can be protective of vendors, I'm not sure if this place is one on here yet, or if they even post here. I would like to be confident that my assumption is correct before I say anything to my uncle.

They told him that if the car has to go in for warranty work to bring it back and they'll put the stock tune back on and the dealer will never know. Which I believe to be bs, as I am almost positive the camaros have a reflash memory. Fast forward, the car gets tuned and the tuner tells him since the car only has 900 miles that he can't get all the power out of the tune, and to come back for a retune once some more miles are on the car. Also the guy trades out wheel horse for crank at random when talking numbers, he had my uncle convinced he would be making 480-490 wheel horse with full exhaust and another tune.

We don't 'protect' vendors here. If they do something that is dishonest, we'll out them in a heartbeat That being said, there are a few vendors that visit the forum quite often, and most of them will make sure that a sour situation gets corrected for us.

I don't have a direct quote for you, but I have heard that the dealer can tell when the tune has been modified, EVEN if they set it back to the original tune. What I would have him do is actually talk to the dealership and see if they will bless the tune. Some dealerships are less strict than others with this.

If he tuned it his warranty on his engine is toast. They can tell. Hopefully the dealership is cool with it. If not he's SOL.

Definitely find a dealer who will be ok to work on car that is tuned. Or in my good fortune City Chevrolet in Charlotte, does performance tunes at the dealership

Maybe you can find a dealer like that or someone who will work on a tuned car.

Yeah a couple things sound sketchy there... but it sounds like we might be playing 'hearsay'. Were you there during any of these exchanges, or are you getting all this via your uncle?

(Edit: I suck at spelling!)

First, it sounds like your uncle would benefit taking you with him the next time he takes his car to that shop. Based on the HP statement, it sounds like you could have cleared that up, if you were there.

Second, the function on this board can really be your friend. Lots of threads about everything you are concerned about. Play with it some... it works well once you learn how to use it properly.

Third, you are correct... a tune will technically void a warranty... although this will all come down to the dealer, what you disclose to him, and what testing the dealer may do to check for warranty voiding modifications.

Lastly, as for having a tune done after more miles... that sounds about right. The car does "grow up", and it may make sense to take it back in for re-tuning after you've broken it in.

My $0.02.

Grats to your Uncle (hope he lets you drive it)!
And Welcome!

I'm assuming he has an LS3 M6 SS?
Intake, full exhaust, and a tune are making anywhere from 400-420 rwhp depending on the dyno.

The L99 A6 SS (auto) with the same mods are making 350 - 370 rwhp.

About the warranty. This has been a huge debate in this forum. A tune (if discovered) would void the engine/power train warranty. But it all depends on the exact problem and if its related to the tune. The warranty on the unrelated parts will still be good. I get warranty work done on my 2010 Camaro and its modded and tuned. But I haven't had an tranny issues either.

Welcome to the side.....

I for one have no problems with Mustangs anyway. But, you should find a lot of help here. A pretty darn good group of people hang out on this site.

The Service Manager at my local dealer is a very good family friend and he told me specifically that if you have a tune done on the car no matter what it'll void your warranty!

Also welcome , I had an 01' Cobra S/C myself .

One thing about these tuners that say that they will put it back to factory specs if you need warrenty work done, does that mean if it stops running for some reason they will pay to have it towed to their shop, redo the tune and then pay to have it towed to the dealer? I doubt it.. Also If the dealer still denys Warrenty work because of Computer modifications, will they pay for any repairs? Something to think about...
Again Welcome to the forum, hopefully we can convert you over from the dark side...

By law they're required to honor your warranty unless they can prove that your aftermarket work is what caused the problem. In practice, if they suspect your tune messed up the engine, they'll deny your warranty claim on it and assume (pretty reasonably) that you won't spend the money to hire a lawyer and make them prove it in court, where they'd probably win anyway.

When you get your car tuned you still have your warranty on unrelated parts.
Example, If your radio control buttons fall out, or your passenger visor breaks, or one of the many TSB related issues (heat core noise, etc), they will still fix these type issue under warranty.

But if your tranmission breaks and your car is tuned, you're going to be rebuilding or repacing the tranmssion out of pocket.
