Thumbs up 2010 Camaro SS named "Sports Car" with best resale value by Kiplinger

Check this out. Kiplinger just rated the 2010 SS Camaro as the best resale value in the sports class.

Best Resale Value: Sports

2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS
Sticker price: $31,595 (1SS manual)
Dealer cost: $30,365
New Car Blue Book Value: $32,543
Five-year service cost: $3,900
One-year insurance cost: $1,225
Resale value after three years: 62% -- five years: 44%
City: 16 mpg -- Highway: 24mpg

Also capturing the nod for Best New Car, the highly anticipated Camaro SS features a growling V8 that puts out 426 horses and a retro design inside and out. Not surprisingly, this beast is expected to be in demand on the used market as well, with resale values of 62% after three years and 44% after five.

To win best-resale plaudits, the model must first be selected as one of the top 25 vehicles in its category. Then we pick the vehicle with the highest three-year resale value.

It's all about supply and demand.. if Gm can keep the supply just under demand..That's what Mini does and it works for them. I would never want to buy a used SS though .. don't know how it has been treated..

I hate to rain on this parade, but I think clg is correct . . . . that current resale value must be based on all the crazy "used" prices that we have been seeing; I've seen plenty of "used" Camaros (usually with very low mileage) asking more than sticker . . . but that cannot last

I did one of the "true cost to own" comparisions -- I think it was on Edmunds -- and the 2SS came out with the lowest cost to own, versus several lower cost competitors such as the V6 Camaro . . . I thought that was strange, so looked at it a little harder -- they were showing the first-year resale value at something like $5K over sticker! So they were actually showing a negative cost to own for the first year! (or something silly like that)

so anyway, my guess is that Kiplinger report is probably based on wacky numbers

Perhaps, but it's still good publicity and at a time when GM needs to keep sales up, it's good news.

I'm not parting with mine, ever. Pre-order and relatively low vin number. Delivered on 5-29-09 and have 2600 miles on it. I'm sure others have lower miles and vins but I'm pretty confident I could unload it for a heck of price if I had to. Even though there are getting to be more and more of them on the road in my area, the drool factor is still outrageous.

My ride was a good investment!

I would think the limited production models (Synergy & whatever comes next) would hold value well. Imagine what the "Jay Leno" would re-sell for? V6 yea, but with a pair of turbo chargers!!

Wacky numbers, definitely! I'd believe Edmonds over Kiplingers any day.. KBB is wrong too ..

Just like I used to tell all my Global Warming idiots, I mean friends .. time will tell.

One of the biggest hits that American cars take on resale value isn't quality, it's the rebates and special deals they put through that devalue the entire model. Since the V8 is selling better than expected and the value of a V6 is ridiculously good, I don't see any outrageous incentives over the short term. That should keep the residual higher than comparable vehicles.

Although, I'd be shocked if it actually hits 62% 3 years from now.......unless the rumors are true and they change to a V6 Z28, Turbo 4 for the SS, and Standard 4 cyl. with AFM on the LT 3 years from now.

>>>> If this were a real number, leasing the Camaro would be dirt cheap.

I don't see how they know what the resale value will be in 5 years. I understand on a Miata or Malibu, or Camry, or even a Mustang. But a 2010 Camaro that is all new.. They have no history to prove their numbers.

There may be no rebates right now, but with the mass production they are still doing, it is only a matter of time, before the streets are so saturated with Camaros and used Camaros that the price will come down. Thus knocking it off this list.

Sorry,, that is how I see it.

All that said, I would still really like to have a New Camaro SS

So what is this saying that I shouldn't drive my 2SS? I love to drive it and enjoy the car. Sure there are some things I would like in version 2 but overall it is an awesome car. But everything I am seeing is that I should put it up on blocks. Hard thing to think because I believe you should enjoy something you own. Which means go drive it.

Our Dealership successfully sold several "Avis" Rental Camaros for about $2000-$2500 under new MSRP price. These cars had between 4900 to 7900 miles. On the V6 models that was a drop of only 8% and about 6% on a SS2. I never sold any over MSRP cars all were at sticker and the new ones are still getting close to sticker in our corner of Texas.

I really think it is possible they will hold their value, how many in here are planning to trade in their Camaro? Don't be shy raise your hands. Hmmm not too many I bet. The reasons why they will hold their value is:

1. Low inventory on Used Camaros no one or very few are going to trade the first few years

2. No rebates or deeply discounted deals to undermine the true value of the car.

3. The raw sex appeal of the camaro, even if they are a little used they are still a very desirable creature.

I don't care. I not selling anyways. If the Z28 comes out I'll probably convince wife to buy it. She needs a new car. Whats hers is really mine. Does not work the other way around.

My insurance co. couldn't rate the car. They asked what I paid for it, and said $822 a year for good coverage. They're nuts, but when the error is in your favor....oh well, maybe they'll wise up next year and I'll get soaked. There seems to be no real concensus as to what this hot newly reintroduced flying brick is worth...yet.
