We've done quite a lot to the car that wouldn't be on a 'normal' HPE800 so I'd rather not muddy the waters. Heh! Hennessey will post pricing for the package on their website once they've figured out how they're going to market it (if they haven't already). I started out to do a 'built' HPE 650 then we changed paths to the twin turbo so my situation is a bit complicated.

I will say that building a 'project car' usually ends up costing more than you set out to spend but in the end, if you're lucky, you end up with something unique and hopefully very special.

Hey,

First of all congratz on the great ride! Its a monster, a beauty and I'm sure you will love it.

I hope I speak for all when I say it makes me feel proud seeing a camaro like yours, even if I will never own one like yours, as it shows how far our stock or slightly modded cars can go. It also motiates us to push ours closer to what they can truly acheive.

When reading about the 0-60 time related posts above, and saw how you mentioned torque being a factor and how the ls9 camaro might give better numbers, I wondered if your car will have gear by gear or speed based torque management to more efficiently put the power to the wheels and to get the fastest and potentially faster 0-60 than the lower rated HP versions.

Just want to say again that I love your car and cant wait to see actual performance figures once you get it to a track.

Thanks Tariq, Glad you like it!

The 0-60 time issue is a complex one... Automatics are the tranny of choice for drag cars since they can be set up (custom torque converters and gearing) to allow you to get the rpms up BEFORE launch so you can build power/boost right off the line by slipping the torque converter resulting in a good launch without slamming your driveline and breaking stuff. On a ROAD track though autos are prone to overheating (unless they were designed with that kind of use in mind like the newer double clutch 'autos') so a manual is better for that use. Launching a manual on the drag strip is a balancing act between power, clutch slip, wheel slip, and drivetrain stress. If you build a godzilla manual drivetrain you can hammer it and do high RPM clutch dumps with drag slicks and once you find the sweet spot it just hooks and go's, usually without destroying things... USUALLY. Unfortunately the market is still getting caught up with the relative 'newness' of the 5th Gen Camaro so those stronger components are still trickling in. Until they're here and set ups proven you aren't going to see the super low 0-60/18th mile or even 1/4 mile times out of MANUALS since they have a really hard time consistently hooking up and getting a good 60ft time. The high power manuals DO come into their own once you get them rolling so you'll see nice high top speeds in the 1/4 though.

I'm not a millionaire so we left the traction control/stability control alone. Unless you're REALLY taking it easy driving around you need to disable traction control (one click) and leave the stability control on; which is pretty much what I do all the time. Otherwise you're gonna eat up your rear brake pads in a hurry (it can't realistically rein in this much power but it tries) and the car fights you when taking off from a light hard enough to get wheel slip. With traction control off its up to driver skill to feather the throttle and not just hammer it or you'll soon end up with an expensive pile of wreckage sitting in a ditch...

Another problem with independent rears in high power cars is wheel geometry under heavy 'load' such as during a hard launch. They not only squat which affects camber they usually have issues with the rear wheels toeing out which affects traction and stability during the launch... (I've upgraded the bushings, toe links and trailing arms to help control this) This IS a problem on the camaro though one that adjustments can be made to compensate for to some extent. Trying to set up a car for the drag strip is quite different than a set up for a road track and if you specialise enough then you've compromised street driveability so its definitely a balancing act!

My car has all the bushings upgraded, solid engine mounts, an upgraded clutch of course, KW v3 coil overs, BMR trailing arms and adjustable toe links, Hotchkis sway bars with BWoody adjustable heavy duty end links, heavy duty half shafts, a front driveshaft loop from BMR that Hennessey modified just a bit for my car, a Hotchkis 'chassis max' rear subframe brace, and Baer Extreme plus 6s brakes. I'm waiting on heavy duty input/output shafts and then we'll see how the driveshaft and diff hold up...

Loooong reply but the short version is I doubt we'll get significantly improved 0-60 times since its primarily traction related BUT from a rolling start.... HOLD ON!

Wow as expected from one of the top tuners, they have their stuff thought out and have spread the mods around to strngthen everything up so your motor doesnt just tear everything apart ....

Regarding my original question on torque management, i didnt really get an answer from all that. Unless you were trying to answer it when you were talking about traction control.

I have a friend who had a super fast 1000hp z06 project in the works (he sold it off 95% complete as it was kind of beocming too much of a hassle coordinating with people in the US and back with mechanics who werent top notch back here and bought a zr1 instead) and he was basically limiting power to the wheels through tuning so the cars computer wouldnt allow the car to pass certain torque levels at the lower gears to help him gain traction down low, then as the gears moved along the car would have the full range to play with.

He was building this for more 'bragging rights' then 'drag racing' secondly and also had a plan for it to be a daily driver (stressing the need for electronic torque management)

Therefore, if I misunderstood when you were reffering to traction control and not being a millionaire.. it doesnt really take more than a tuner who knows all the technicals on the issue to manage that..

Yet again im no pro so I might be mistaken or misisng something out...

Anyway, like i said before.. you have a great car!

Sorry about that, you're right I didn't quite answer your question. They did tune the car so the torque curve (the 870 hp setting) is a bit more linear than you normally see with hi powered cars so all the torque doesn't come on so low that the car ends up a real bear to drive because of constant tire spin. I don't know offhand what tuning software they use nor exactly how they set up the boost controller ( I believe its an 'HKS EVC VI'). Hennessey would need to get their lead tuner on here to answer that question, but its a good one so I need to find out too! Heh!
My original answer was only a partial one I think. Generally 'traction control' also includes a form of 'torque management' in the ECU where it reduces fuel/timing etc on top of using the ABS system to restrain wheel spin but to be honest I can't say for sure exactly how the OEM system on the Camaro works off hand. Thats a topic I need to do some more homework on!

If you're building an LSx based twin turbo then yours is gonna be TRULY wild! Heh! You can throw a lot more boost at that block than even a built LS3 so your car should quite a handful! Good luck and I look forward to your story.
