Do I go with 20's or 21's ???

I have a question for everyone. The dealer is trying to sell me the 2SS with 21's. I have a friend who bought this setup and he said the replacement cost for the 21's is out of sight. He wished he'd stayed with the 20's. Anybody know much about this and the replacement costs?

Appearance vs. Perormance.

21s may look great, and for the most part you'd get no argument other than just over the styling of the wheel.

21s will be heavier, which can impact acceleration, ride and handling. 21s have a shorter sidewall tire meaning a stiffer ride, and the shorter sidewalls can make the wheel more susceptible to pot holes and road debris.

It has been mentioned in the many threads on this topic, that most race cars do not try to put as much wheel under the car as possible. It is "primarily" for looks. And done right, it sure can look good.

IMO the 20's are sized about right for the Camaro, but I've seen several cars with 21's that look very well done. 22's to me start to overpower the car.

So in summary, looks vs. go. And keep in mind if you really aren't "going" a lot or hard, you might think looks are more important.

So only you know the true answer (do that in a Yoda voice)

Some 21s and 22s are stronger and lighter than the stock wheel

Get the 20s so you can ditch them and upgrade to some nice aftermarket forged 22s instead with the money you saved over the dealer 21s

21's are an odd size hence the much higher tire replacement cost. If you notice the majority of aftermarket wheel companies jump from 20" to 22" the tire companies follow suit and have more demand for 20" & 22" tires than 21" = less demand higher cost.

I knew someone would post that up. But if you go that route, the equivalent 20 from the same manufacturer would be lighter still.

GM has some pretty strict requirements for wheels that I don't think all the aftermarket folks can meet. Some might, some might not. Even the GM 21 is meeting those strict requirements.

So, OP, it is true if you compare the stock 20" to an aftermarket 21 you might find a lighter wheel.

Stronger............................as a GM Validation Mgr.................I would like to validate that claim LOL. I can assure you GM goes to extreme lengths to get the strength of their wheels. Which is the sole reason you can find them lighter.

By the way, if you go back a few years ago, the Corvette C6R team switch brands of wheels just for stiffness. They went from BBS to OZ if I remember correctly. Saved like 2 seconds a lap at LeMons. And even if you give them the strength, longer spokes are harder to get to be as stiff unless you make them THICKER and those don't usually go well with styling.

I think my question would be how much does a 20" vs. a 22" affect driving ability, AKA, turning? I know that big rims sometimes look nice, but they can affect the sidewalls of the tires and the car itself if they're not fitted correctly.

Whenever I get my Camaro, I'm just going to get w/e stock rims come with it and find a better looking set of aftermarket rims to put on, since the stock ones are just OK, and not exceptional.

If u want 21's buy aftermarket for MUCH cheaper. In fact I think 22's may even be better move I you want bigger (tires cost less). 4000+ for dealer 21's is just rediculous
