Smile Camaro Racing in NASCAR

For those of us into the NASCAR thing, it looks as if Chevy is one step closer to bringing the Camaro to the race track in the Nationwide Series. See the link below, but the essence of the article is this:

"Of the four manufacturers currently racing in the series, only Toyota has announced its model for the Nationwide new car, the Camry that currently races in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series. The new car type would include Chevrolet's new Camaro, Ford's Mustang and Dodge's new Challenger.

"NASCAR was looking for a pony car, or a car that's different than what we have on the Cup Series," said Laerte Zatta, Toyota program manager for the Craftsman Truck and Nationwide series. "But we don't have a model that is very different."
Well there's an understatement if I've ever heard one...

Anyway, see the full article below, but I thought it was interesting that they called out the Camaro in the article. Enjoy...

I am rapidly losing interest in NASCAR after having been a long time fan since the '60's.

Regardless, Toyota still has the Solara as a possible candidate. (although I vaguely recall it may be shortlived on the market.)

Bring back IROC without the IROC label.

Solara is really not a mainstream coupe. It's marketed to chix IMO*.

And the V-6 Camaro, Mustang and Challenger are/or will be marketed to whom?

That may well be true, but the reality is it is the closest thing Toyota has as far as a two door "sporty" coupe.

If I wasn't married I would be too. But, life being what it is, I won't turn a blind eye to a lovely smile!

NASCAR is in the process of aquiring the Grand Am series, which owns the KONI challenge series. Riley Technologies has been tabbed to develop the camaro for the series http://www.motorsport.com/news/artic...ANDAM-GRANDCUP

So in therory, if the camaro doesnt make it into the Nationwide series, it will make it to the KONI challenge series that is under the Grand Am series and still be technically part of NASCAR.

All this is brought to you by the Dept. of Redundancy Dept. Series

Autoblog just had a post about this earlier today. They caught pictures of the Camry, Challenger, and a Fusion testing for the Nationwide series. There was a Chevy model as well, but all it had for identification was a bowtie. It certainly did not look like it was going to be a Camaro.

I'm with Headpunter, I don't watch a lot of NASCAR because the only way to distinguish between cars is the sticker of the front end. I like the idea of the camaro back in racing in some form though. I think I would prefer the Grand Am series, it is finally getting coverage from Speed.

I think I would pay attention to any series that used cars that were actually based on Vehicles available to us as consumers.

Those cars look as dreadful as the vaunted COT. Accccckkkkk

The COT reminds me a bit of the cars from the late 80's/early 90's. Its better than the car it replaced, but its too generic. I still watch Nascar every week but the one thing that it needs is a rule saying that the cars need to run the same engine size and drive configuration that their production counterparts do. If that were initiated today, Dodge would be the only make that would have a legal car: 5.7L V8, rear wheel drive.

I would watch the Nationwide series if they used Camaros, Mustangs, Challengers, and ??????

so I found some more news on this GM is resisting the Camaro name plate even though they will be allowing the body's of the actual cars so we would see the Camaro beat the Stnag & Challi on the weekend (those are both confirmed) via this acrticle as well

now here's a good way of getting rid of the redneck/hillbilly stereotype: make a nascar-vehicle of the camaro

if that really happens the camaro loses a few sympathy-points :/

We do know that Ford and Dodge have both decided to run versions of their Mustang and Challenger muscle cars as their Nationwide entries. Chevrolet
still resists running their muscle car, the Camaro, and will instead run the Impala SS, the same car it runs in the Cup series. They have been resisting pressure by NASCAR of late to use their Camaro muscle car in the Nationwide Series, but have continued to state that

they will not be using the Camaro anytime soon in the Nationwide Series.

I really don't care much about Nascar. I want to see real, differentiated cars on a real course with varied turns in both directions. I'm far more interested in ALMS and the like. Still, this quote
Quote:
"NASCAR was looking for a pony car, or a car that's different than what we have on the Cup Series," said Laerte Zatta, Toyota program manager for the Craftsman Truck and Nationwide series. "But we don't have a model that is very different."
made my day.

Yea nascar is sucking just like the nhra series. Whos bright idea was it to get rid of the sports cars racing and replacing them with 4 door family mobiles.

Exclamation

Hey everyone, all you NASCAR fans should join the Social group I started on the forum and post any photos of anything NASCAR...

The Camaro, IMO, would ROCK any of the NASCAR tiers...Sprint, or Nationwide, ARCA, etc...

I love it when the 2010 Camaro has been the "Pace Car" for many races this season...the picture of the pace car is on the cover of my NASCAR Social Group page.....

I love the comments from people on those articles. Blasting NASCAR because the cars aren't "stock" anymore. There has NEVER been a "stock" car in NASCAR.

BTW, back in the beginning days of NASCAR, the drivers drove their OWN PERSONAL VEHICLES to the track, raced in them, and then drove them home again...

The cars were "stock cars" for MANY years, and a lot of the parity you see amongst the cars now is for SAFETY REASONS!!!...

Please learn a little about the sport's history before making unfounded statements...

Heck the only full Nascar race I watched was this years Indy 500 just to see the pace car. With that said I think GM/Chevy would be better going with the Impala, Caprice or Malibu.

But I must say Would make me watch it a bit more...
