Those are the two I am also trying to decide on. Been a long time user of V-1
but I think I am going to switch over. Also will mount it front grill with laser jammer (remote instal)

Initially, I had been looking at the Escort 9500ci. Pricey, but one of the best you can get.

I ended up not going that route, but it's funny you asked this...I just bought a radar detector today - the Passport 8500 X50. No laser jamming, but does everything else. And, much less expensive than the 9500ci.

So how well does this 'jamming' actually work?

Jamming is illegal in most states. And some ban the detectors themselves. They call it "shifting" or "phasing" but basically they are emitting an out of phase laser signal that is supposed to mix with the police signal and return an unreadable signal to the gun.

As long as the detector or any of its components are not found by the officer after he stops you for "visual" reference of speeding (after his normally reliable gun gives him wacky readings) and remains completely undetectable by their "sniffers" you should ok.

What should one expect to pay for a Valentine 1 or 9500ci?

the more basic question is:

do radar detectors even work?

I've seen other posts / comments that say that by the time the thing goes off, it is too late, because you have already been shot with the radar or laser. The only time it will save you is if it picks up a stray signal off a car in front of you.

Any input on this?

second question -- do all of those detectors mentioned come with the remote install option (I assume this means you install the sensor behind the grill and then run a wire from there to the unit inside the car, installed under the dash) or do you have to buy a special model?

Oh.... radar detectors.

I thought this was the age old debate about whether it is cheaper in the long run to just rent love.

Radar detectors work because they can pick up signals not being shot directly at your car and give you plenty of warning. Laser detectors work, but when it goes off they already have your speed. Its directed at one vehicle at a time. The laser jammers work great from what Ive read too.

Radar detectors are only illegal in Virgina and D.C......and military bases.

This is more true with lasers because they are usually lasing the vehicle itself...sometimes you will get a stray signal, so any warning you get could be too late, but if you do get one you need to take it seriously in case it is a stray signal.

With the other bands, it can be very helpful. New radar guns have a POP mode which is instant on, but you still may have time to slow down before they can really tag you.

Most of the time here in Washington, I have enough warning to slow down though.

I think they are illegal in Connecticut too, or at least they were in the past.

Maybe the thing is that most speed traps are using lasers now, so that's why they say radar detectors are not effective?

I had the V1 for 9 years. I now have the 9500ix. The v1 is good, i liked the arrows. But, the 9500 has better range and the learning feature is better than the arrows plus it user upgradable and they provide monthly updates to the database of speed traps and cameras.

Get the 9500ix

As far as a laser jammer i really doubt any are effective. When you talk radar, the signal is more of a wave that expands as it goes out thus you can get some of the signal before you top a hill or catch the bounceback around a curve. When you are talking lasers though the detection beam is a concentrated dot similar to a laser pointer. The officers are trained to "aim" at the point of a car that will give the best "reflection" normally a front license plate or the windshield. If you are "jamming" those areas in whole it theoretically might work but the odds are against you. Also the laser doesn't transmit a signal until the operator has aimed then pulls the trigger the beam travels at the speed of light which gives you virtually no chance of slowing down. The other tool an officer has is instant on radar in which the officer waits until you are very close then "blasts" you. Both are extremely hard to avoid detector or no. After over a million miles traveling the open road (most above the speed limit, lol) the best is to try to hide in a line of traffic. There is always a "rabbit" to lead you on your journey. Follow them at a distance of a 1/4 mile or so with a detector and they will be the guys to get the ticket. I have used the same Bel RX65 for over four years and other than sending it in to have the receiver adjusted once I've been very pleased with it. I know Bel has got the new GX-65 with the built in GPS and photo radar in it but I fortunately don't travel in many areas with photo radar in place. Hope this helps. Oh as far as the jammers aka rocky Mountain Radar they only pay for tickets that are a certain percentage over the limit. Normally 15% and most police will let you get away with that anyway. So, if you are actually speeding above the officer's "leeway" the radar company has a clause to keep from paying.

The lazer shifters should not allow a reading of speed it is like they missed your car with the lazer.

I havnt tried that 9500xi but Valentine is what i have and have been truly amazed at how it has saved me on several occasions. none of them are 100%, but the V1 is outstanding.

I normally don't do this, but I can't pass up an opportunity for a picture reply.

It's "Laser", not "Lazer"

go with the v1 from experience it is the best thing out, i would waste time with radar jamming, there is a little thing police use thats called speed estimation, it pretty much is they can guess your speed and give some bs mathmatical formula and makes them win in court
