Im getting my whole car painted when I get it and they said it is going to cost about 3-4 grand for the whole thing...including the stripes I want. And this place is legit. Not a backyard garage paint shop.

Unless it's your father or brother that quoted you 3-4 grand to repaint a brand new car...I would not let them paint it. You are not going to be happy.

No this place has been on discovery channel for their paint jobs. They usually do custom choppers but they said they do a few cars every now and then. And it is easier to paint a new car as opposed to an old one becuse there is no body work that needs to be done like dents and such. Maybe he was just throwing the estimate out there but I dont care I pay whatever i need to to get my 'maro the way i want it.

The '69 RS/SS pace cars (and factory replicas) came from the factory with what is referred to as the "Z/28" striping package.

For me, painted stripes are the only way to go. My '67 RS/SS has a painted bumble bee stripe and painted RS striping.

Why someone would want to repaint a brand new car I do not know, just pick your favorite color out of the line up.

Ya sure but the Z10 and Z11 were special edition packages which were available for part of the year only.

I still think decals are the safer and cheaper way to go. If you don't like it, just take it off. And really, it's not like anybody will know the difference until they're like, five feet or less from your car. (Lol.)

I thought about this myself while i was debating whether or not I REALLY needed the car in Jet Black, opposed to just black, which is what GM offers...

i'll stick with factory black

Waxing vinyl stripes is always a good idea. When I had my '78 Trans Am, a good wax on the hoodbird really brought it to life. The trick is to stay away from the edges of the decal and just be careful. If you wax allover the the decal, the wax builds up along the edges and ends up looking very unpleasant when it dries. It can be fixed with a good buff, but it's not worth the extra work when you can just avoid it by being careful.

My favorite car color is not offered. That is why I am getting it painted. If I wanted just a factory car I would go buy an Aveo or something and keep it stock. I am buying a Camaro because I want something different. I am making it MY Camaro.

What about matte vinyl stripes? I want flat black ones but I've heard conflicting opinions on whether or not flat/matte vinyl or paint stripes can be waxed. The question that always comes to mind is if you can wax the stirpes, how the hell do you wax the hood and decklid?

i have matte black stripes on my car and i had a problem once w/ it getting waxed, the problem is that the matte vinyl is porous, extremely small obviously, but gives it that flat look. and those tiiiny holes catch the wax and hold it.

it left buffer swirls on mine, came out instantly tho w/ a lil silicone cleaner

He pretty much hit the nail on the head. Flat black decals are porous on an almost microscopic level, but it is what gives them that look. If you want to protect it with wax, try to use the clearest wax you can and you'll still end up having to buff them extra hard, most likely with a silicone cleaner like he mentioned. But if you're that worried, soap and water protects decals relatively well. They'll end up having to be replaced several years down the road either way if you want them to always look new, but I'd say that's a fairer deal than having to repaint the entire car.

The biggest problem with painting on stripes is not only the permanence of the procedure, but also the margin for error is always bigger than with a decal. If your body shop screws up, then you're screwed up.
