Toyota Customers Experience Unintended Acceleration Again

You already know that Toyota has an acceleration problem, so all the jokes about Toyotas in triple digits on the highway are old by now. What you don't know is that people are having the problem after the problem is "fixed," according to Left Lane. People are going fast in their slow cars, getting the problem repaired, and having it happen again. Does this mean Toyota needs a re-recall?

Discuss.

nah, just come back and we'll put over-ride brakes in but need I remind you that our brakes don't always work properly either.

I knew this wasn't over with what they were doing to fix the problem. Must be a very nasty computer bug that the big brains can't figure out.

Don't you remember? Toyota has said its not a computer problem. These people must just be making this story up.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Edmunds.com is prepared to give $1 million to whoever can crack the mystery of unintended acceleration in recalled Toyota vehicles.

The site announced preliminary plans this week to reward researchers who can accurately address the situation that's confounded automaker executives and government experts alike. Officials are challenging participants to demonstrate in a controlled environment a repeatable factor that will cause an unmodified vehicle to accelerate suddenly and unexpectedly.

Edmunds.com officials noted that they've seen online consumer discussion on their site about unintended acceleration involving Toyota units as far back as November 2006. They highlighted an entry titled "Toyota Sienna Uncontrolled Acceleration" that was posted on their Town Hall section more than three year ago.

"We have heard compelling testimony from consumers. Many incidents are not fully addressed by recalls," contended Jeremy Anwyl, chief executive officer of Edmunds.com.

"NHTSA is responding to the challenge with more of what they have already done: additional investigations. Isn't it time to try a different approach? We at Edmunds.com think so," Anwyl continued.

That different approach is still being finalized by Edmunds.com. Officials indicated that complete rules are being drafted for winning the prize. They hope to attract the best automotive thinkers in the world to apply themselves to determine what is really causing sudden unexpected acceleration in vehicles.

Edmunds.com is putting together this program not just because of issues involving Toyota vehicles.

"As Edmunds.com has previously disclosed, every car company has received complaints from consumers relating to vehicles that suffered unintended acceleration," site officials explained.

"This problem has been festering for more than 20 years when Audi fell prey to notorious headlines about the subject," they continued.

Anwyl believes this initiative not only could be financially rewarding to the researcher who tackles the problem, but also enhance safety for all consumers.

"Open source created a forum for great programmers to contribute in building great software. Let's see if this kind of ‘crowd sourcing' can work in the pressing area of automotive safety," Anwyl proposed.

"Consumers need to feel confident that the vehicles that they are driving are as safe as possible," he went on to say. "We look forward to seeing the safety contributions that this effort generates."

If you're going to make friends, make friends with the professors. Anybody see a link to the code? Or know what language it's in?

i think this is all getting blown out of proportion. I am not saying that there is not a serious problem, but is seems to be that the media is really having a hayday with Toyota even though other automakers have significant recalls as well.

Most of the other recalls won't take you or your family to certain death. I would say a car taking off on you is a big deal.
Next time your out for a drive have someone chain your feet to the seat brackets and throw a cement block on the pedal and see how far you make it. Then tell me it's not a big deal or their blowing thing out of proportion.

Not even close...Toyota has set a new record for corruption, irresponsibility, ineptness, and general "low-ness". They, without a doubt, deserve every ounce of scrutiny they get right now.

If this was GM all the haters would be out in full force calling for the heads of any and everyone. So often I'm seeing opinions that Toyota should somehow get a pass on this...screw that noise....this is obviously a huge problem in which families have been permanently changed forever. They deserve the loss of public trust for their greed.

I hate Toyota even though my family has 2 Toyotas. My dad has a 07 Toyota Tundra that has nothing but problems. First, the tire pressure light would not turn off. Then the entire radio screen was blank and you have to change the radio stations blindly. Next came the recall of the pedal/floor mat. Last but not least, the drive belt is cracking. The two and a half year old truck has about 15650 miles on it. The dealer and the customer rep said it's normal wear and tear and is not covered by the warranty. WTF?! Screw Toyota.

Toyota is tarnished for good anyway. A lot of people are still willing to buy them, but they definitely lost a good percentage of their consumer base

Yeh a lot of other automakers have faced serious recalls, except the difference is that what toyota did was send out the recalls way to late. They already knew about this problem a few years ago, and back then a possibly innocent man went to jail because he claimed that the brakes in his toyota didn't work and he killed some people. Nobody believed him and he was thrown in the slammer by the judge.

Nowadays, people have been killed because they were either driving toyotas that had faulty brakes and they didn't know, or people were hit by toyotas with faulty brakes.

So the whole toyota recall debacle has lead to death of a rather large amount of people and possibly someone innocent going to jail.

Now they are trying to do whatever they can so that people start walking back into their showrooms. It's all about the money, they don't even have the balls to take the blame.

Only kills people who don't know how to use neutral or the off switch and increases the health of our gene pool.

Yeah, I mean its not like any American car company would make a car the catches fire on rear impacts, or would make up war profiteering charges against a competitor to get the government to shut them down...

I just want to make sure I understand your position. Every single person who has been killed due to unintended acceleration doesn't know how to drive? Even the police officer? Even the ones who tried shifting into neutral but nothing happened? Even the ones who can't turn their car off because of the keyless ignition?

people are not bashing toyota because they have a problem.people are bashing them because they covered it up for so long and a lot of innocent people are now dead or injured because of it.
