I am soo glad that GM threw in a USB instead of a stupid Ipod jack, just for us people ( and we do exist) that hate IPOD's. USB is soooo much easier. No file conversions, no special cables, no special connections that only one company uses, i can just take a flash drive, which are getting bigger and cheaper by the day, and plug it in.

Check out this older thread. I only wish I could go back and find the threads from when I first came on...when we were talking about USB ports, SD card slots, etc. Years ago we asked for it and now it's HERE!

LMAO..

But now, if only the USB port had a headphone jack!

Isn't that basically what an ipod is? A USB port with a headphone jack?? Isn't that what every mp3 player is? omg. breakthrough.

LOL nice observation! But yeah that pretty much sums it up I suppose. I have never owned an mp3 cause I didn't think they were worth it. But I will get a usb drive, and was wondering if I should just run to like Best Buy and grab one for $20 or get a nicer one?

But see that's the beauty of a CHEAP USB drive... you spend 20 bucks.. and leave it in your car.. no need to worry about replacing it or having your outrageously expensive ipod stolen.

Use your ipod or mp3 player as mobile source of music.. use a usb drive as your cars cheap HD that is updatable from your pc.

Depends on the capabilities of the stereo. If the stereo can cycle though the song list and artists in the flash drive then yes it's a waste of money but if not then you'll need a MP3 player if you want to choose which songs play.

Its been stated that the computer will be able to manually search any music files in the main directory of the usb drive. IF you use the auxiliary port instead then yes you will need a MP3 player because the auxiliary port is nothing more than an input from another music source.

Nice. I didn't know that. Now I have a use for all these 2 gig flash drives that I don't use anymore.

I can see it now...rather than getting rear ended by someone digging through their CD collection looking for that one CD they really want to listen to, I'll be likely to get hit by someone trying to find a particular flash drive among the various collection of them floating around in the center armrest...

Or it will be someone that can't figure out which way to put the flash drive in the USB port while they are driving...now does it go with the label towards me or away from me? Damn only-goes-one-way USB ports...

BTW GM - Thanks for putting this in the Camaro - I'd rather carry a flash drive with me for music and will likely never put a CD in the stereo now.

Exactly, all you are paying for in an ipod/mp3 player is a micro chip which most likely costs a few bucks, a screen, some memory, and probably the most expensive thing in it a battery.

I am going to love using the USB drive over cd's. I have a zune and plug it into my aftermarket head unit but its less convenient than using the head unit to control the songs.

8GB for under $20 FTW, thats at least 1600 mp3's. I have an Alpine deck with USB support, haven't burned a CD in months, no more scratched up discs either.

Don't they even make headphones that you can plug a USB drive into?

In case you were looking for an mp3 player to have - here's another comparison page. I like having an mp3 player because I store movies on them & watch them between breaks at college, etc...

http://www.zunescene.com/comparison/

I can understand the benefit of just using the USB port - I've seen decks with SD card slots too - they look great & will eventually be used to phase out CD players..

I would honestly be VERY surprised if the head unit interfaced with the IPOD. It has its own encoding (that expensive to buy, thats why ipod docks cost outrageous money). Also 90% of the time the headunit will either recognize regular file systems or apples... but not both.

I hope it does both, but I'm not counting on the ipod interface.

SO for $15ish bucks you can carry 480 songs in your car without having to worry about swapping cd's or getting your car broken into and having them stolen.

PS - with a cd and rough roads you can possibly get skipping and the cd in some cases wont even play.. with USB its solid state meaning that no matter how hard you drive or what the conditions, it will play without skipping.

If you have a lot a music and don't want go thru with all the transfering, an external hard drive would work.... I think

it depends on the power requirements of the hard drive. Some get their power from the usb port.. but if the usb port inst of the/powered type then it wont work (you will need external power).

If its the PAL (personal audio link) that is in their other cars it will work with the ipod.

Corvette, as well as 56 other models under the GM corporate umbrella will soon have a factory device called the "Personal Audio Link" that allows owners to hook up their iPods and play them through their factory audio systems. Rollout of the PAL will begin in October this year and by then of 2007, most GM vehicles should be equipped with the device.

The Personal Audio Link uses existing radio software and is integrated through the radio's digital XM Satellite Radio bank. XM does not have to be activated for the system to work. Similar to FM Modulated systems, the XM integration offers improved sound and contents (artist, title, genre) are viewable on the radio's display. The radio controls on the Corvette's steering wheel will allow drivers to adjust the system volume.

Personal Audio Link Key Features – At a Glance

Seamlessly connects an iPod to the vehicle’s factory installed audio system
Charges iPod when ignition is on
Choose from English, Spanish or French language for function displays
Search and display music by genre, playlist, album, artist
Use seek function to move forward or reverse within a song for up to 15 seconds
Select "shuffle" function to mix music
Sort music using "alphabetical jump" from A-Z list
Sort and select Podcasts and audio books by title
Control volume from steering wheel controls
Personalize text display in dynamic mode (radio display scrolls through artist, album, title, song, time remaining, etc.) or static mode (fixed on one display element such as artist)
Perform fast music searches using high-speed text display technology
The Personal Audio Link will be sold through dealerships for under $160.
