Question Camaro's Competition

Do you think the Camaro SS is ready and will stand up to it's competition? (Dodge Challenger SRT8, Ford Mustang GT, Pontiac G8 GXP,and the Barracuda Plymouth- if it goes into production)
If you don't think the Camaro is a good match for the competitors, tell me why?

BTW the G8 is in a totally different class than the Camaro. There are also based on the same platform so they're sort of like.......cousins. But the Camaro SS vs the Mustang GT vs the SRT8, the Camaro SS wins.

Isn't the real question "Can the competitors keep up with the Camaro?"

Test drive

I just got back from driving both a Mustang GT and a Challanger RT. Lets just say this the Camaro doesn't have to be much of a car to beat the Challanger and the Mustang wont be that hard to beat either. The Challanger had a very floaty feeling and the Mustang was..... well a Mustang. Over all I was not impressed at all with the Challanger and the Mustang was a good car but still wasnt that great.

Hell yes it is ready. I think it will really rule the segment. But what's this about a new Cuda? If that's true I gotta tell my dad, he loves the Cuda.

It will keep up with the competition if the Camaro driver sandbags. The Camaro SS will dominate everything thats at a similar price. The SRT8 and the GXP are both going to be significantly more, and Camaro is still going to outperform them

I voted yes, although the GT500 will probably be an exception. Which is why we may need to see a Z/28 (hint hint)...

To be honest, No.

I think the new mustang GT with the rumored 5.0L engine can be a real challenge for the Camaro.

The current 4.6L 300hp mustang GT already have a 0-60 time of 4.9sec, if they push it up to 350-400hp its gonna be a tough competitor for the SS which I expect it to be in the 4.2-4.6sec range.

That, like the LSA Camaro, is a rumor without enough backing. If it comes to pass, the Mustang will be a toughie, but it will still not be able to keep up to a Camaro with VVT, AFM, Launch Control, balanced weight ratio, FE3 suspension, or any of the other standard features that will be available on either the manual or automatic Chevy Camaro.

The classic competition for the Camaro SS will fall behind at the track. V6 competitors will be a tough match, but the Camaro LS will keep up, although passing lighter, smaller coupes will be tough without some aftermarket help and good driving.

In any case, don't expect to catch a Camaro at the back of the pack.

I haven't heard about that either, but with the fact that there is no such thing as 'Plymouth' anything anymore, I see it as doubtful.

Yeah, I wouldn't consider the G8 a competitor, for one it's a sibling brand under the same parent company. Two, it's a four door sedan which caters to a slightly different consumer.

I can't believe you asked this!

Barracuda? Didn't even know it was being made

Mustang GT? Dude...the V6 can ALMOST keep up with it....

A GXP? Good question. If made w/ the LS3, then the GXP should be heavier that the LS3 Camaro. Camaro wins

Dodge SRT8? Again, weight. Camaro wins.

Yeeeeessssss......Camaro wins.

the Shelby GT500 has 500hp and does a 0-60 in 4.6. What makes you think the Mustang GT with 400hp will be doing that kind of time or better?

I believe it was The5thDentist. He always seems to disagree with everyone, or at least the other 4 out of 5 dentists.

Competition List

If you use the criteria of
1: 2 door sport coupe
2: Base List under $40,000
3: 4* or higher rating in Motor Trend magazine Sept 08

Our direct competition is:
1: Mustang
2: Challenger
3: Infiniti G37
4: Mazda RX-8
5: BMW 328

Just On the outside of these criteria are:
Pontiac G8: a sporty GM 4 door with 3.5 * rating with very similar pricing

Corvette: At $42,000 at the moment, it is just over the price range and very much an option for high end Camaro buyers

Yeah. Doesn't the 135 and 128 also fall under 40k base? I know that's a little steeper than the Camaro but, those cars have some good performance...

Also the next gen Mustang will be a big if. The 2010 Mustang I'm not worried. But 2012 could be. We'll see.

The BMW 1 series had a 3.5 * rating, but should be considered competition. Also, I missed it originally, but the BMW 328 meets all of the criteria.

Nothing to worry about - we have a LS3 and we are only going to get better from that (IMVHO). Enough said.
