Pep Boys has it. I had to shop around quite a bit to find it. Buy some online if you want to save a lot of driving around.

Yes Legend, I used Redline 75W90 in my rear dif. I got two quarts of it.
Drain the old.
Filled up.
Drained out a tad
Topped it off.
All is well and still have 3/4 of a quart left.

I would recommend anyone who is going to do this to pick up a suction gun, makes is SOOOOO much easier. I have a 18oz lumax suction gun that is very nice.

Cheers
K

So,
Haven't ever changed diff fluid.
Do you fill until it starts to overflow a little (that is how I do it on my dirtbike), or is there a way to tell when it is full.

So I want to swap out my rear diff and tranny fluid. I called my dealer. I've been taking my cars to them and to the same service advisor for the last seventeen years. I've become good friends with my service advisor so I don't think he's trying to rip me off but he quoted me the following:

Rear Diff fluid change. $175. $35 a quart and he says the rear diff uses three quarts. (everybody on here says it takes one quart)???

Transmission fluid change. $100. $7.68 a quart, he says it uses five quarts.

What do you all think? I'm horrible with tools and there is no way I can do this myself.

Thanks!

Changed my engine oil at 1004 miles. Changed my tranny fluid at about 1600 miles. Both with Mobil 1 oils. (Synthetic Eng and ATF for Tranny). Tranny does feel better shifting. Smoother and easier.

Going to do Diff at 2500 miles. Have about 350 more miles to go.

We have Auto Zone and Advance Auto to get the oils from if Wally World doesn't carry it.

This is straight from a GM bulletin which should be available at your GM dealership. Just ask the service manager.

“American Axle uses a white or yellow gear “rouge” or marking compound when the tooth contact pattern on the gear is inspected. The white marking compound in particular colors the fluid a milky or semi-metallic gray, … the coloring only lasts between 1,000 and 5,000 miles and then the fluid appears normal. If the customer does not comment of any noise concerns please do not attempt any repairs for the discolored fluid on vehicles under 5,000 miles..."

That all said I still plan to change mine around the 1500 mile mark to get the oil and any slivers of metal out of the rear end while still early in its life.

I do like some of the tips that I have read so far on how to change the fluid. I will be looking for the pump to help get the fluid into the case.

Not sure which fluid I will be using, that research is still on going.

Good luck to all those who change their own fluid.

I so enjoy doing the stuff myself! Mods too!! - well, what I can do. Some stuff I don't want to attempt!

Even bought myself another pair of ramps! Race Ramps - Roll Ups! They're great!

Oh, ditto what everyone else said. Changed all my oils around 1500 miles. Rear Diff was gross - besides smelly as usual. Trans oil wasn't bad. Bought an oil pump for the tranny - what a bear getting the oil in!!

All good! Next oil change (5K miles) around the corner!

I'm a pharmacist with zero mechanical training. This is ridiculously easy to do yourself. Put that money into a floor jack and 4 stands and/or ramps. You can get the fluids you need for $50 at AutoZone. Takes 2hrs tops to do transmission and rear differential. Plus there's a lot of satisfaction in getting to know your car inside and out!

anyone with V6 auto do the tranny fluid and differential? if so can you provide steps or tips. I bought 2 quarts of redline 75W90, dont know how many quarts of ATF i will need but I really would like to know. I'm torn on who I can trust because i had bad dealer experience and dont really wanna go back. I did go buy ramps and jack stands, I have two different floor jacks and have the space to probably do it inside of my garage but I kind of need some tips to do this myself. Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you all

Does anyone recommend a certain oil pump or suction gun that was helpful when changing out the tranny and rear diff. fluids? Thanks for any help....

I will be pulling the car out of storage in a week or so...I live in snow covered Northwestern PA.

I think I will be putting Amsoil in the tranny and diff....I run Amsoil in the motor and use Amsoil in all my race machines. Its well worth the money.
