Best Shorty Header???

I am looking at buying shorty headers shortly and I was wondering
have there been any comparos between the different shorties avalible?

Is there a clear choice on which company offers a better product?

It would be nice if there was a "shootout" like the one that was on here for the Cold Air kits.

They tried to do a shoot out but only Borla offered up a set. He is my thinking - As of today there are 5 manufactures of shorties for our cars. Borla, Edelbrock, BBK, Doug Thorley and JBA. The Borla and Edelbrock headers are made with 1 5/8" tubing. From what I have read, 1 5/8" header tubing is more for engines up to 300 hp and 350 cubic inches. The other manufactures make theirs with 1 3/4" tubing which is better suited for 400+hp and 376 CI. Personally, I think the BBK look weird and cheap. So it is Doug Thorley vs JBA. JBA's are a bit cheaper, but only have a 1 year warranty - lame. Doug Thorley have a 5 year warranty but all are ceramic coated. I like and just want stainless ones. I am in Canada. I haven't found a set of DT yet for under $800. I can get a set of JBA's for way less than that. JBA and DT are both good names. I think the way the pipes flow into each other on the JBA's is a better design with less restriction for better performance. The DT seem to have major pipe bends right at the collector that I would think hinder performance. I am going with JBA. Just my $0.02.

Doug Thorley ST headers $562.95, unless I am mistaken.

But is there a noticable performance difference just adding the shorties?

I have Doug Thorley shorties with GMPP cat backs - awesome torque gains with stock cats still in place.

Do you notice any sound change with these headers installed?

How do you get the 10% off? Is that the lowest price for DT's ST?

Good write up. I'm going with LT Headers, but I like your logical reasoning for those interested Shorties... Thanx

There are some great prices in the US. I am well aware of that, plus the free shipping. I am Canadian. I don't get free shipping. Shipping is at least $50 for shorties. We are also hammered for duty. That is another $70 or so. With the exchange it is still close to $800 Canadian.

I've been seriously considering the Hedman (stainless) shorties. Spoke to Jordan @ JDP motorsports

I have Doug Thorlies and am very satisfied. I paid $506 with discount at Autoanything but that was back in October. Fit and finish as well as looks are superb and definatly feel seat of pants dyno difference (improved low/mid range torque). No tune required and won't void warranty!

DT shorties look great, and I have them, just don't expect any big numbers on them. I just posted my test results in the other shorty forum. Long story short, 18 RWHP gain on same dyno with 93 octane and DT shorties (claimed 18), Hennessey CAI (claimed 14), Borla S-type cat-back (heard somewhere Borla claims about 20 RWHP - pipe dream), and no tune. With tune on shorty/CAI/cat-back configuration, estimating maybe 22-23 RWHP. You can't add up all the gains linearly, doesn't work that way. Shorties with tune, possibly worth 18 RWHP, but not just shorties. Manufacturers don't like to tell you about the tune they do and/or do things like cherry-picked corrections, no smoothing, etc. Lots and lots of bad data out there.

If you are going to get a tune, you might as well just go with LT headers and get the extra HP that comes with them.

Exactly. You'll get twice the gain with longtubes/HF cats and set yourself up for even better numbers when you add mods later. We all know we're going to do more mods later ..

Agreed, you have to stay shorties. Can you do CAI and tune as well? That should get you low 20s gains.
