L99 Limits

How much power can the l99 handle? I'm looking at a supercharger kit that makes 550-600 hp, how will the internals hold up, what are the failure points of this motor? With custom tuning can the afm/vvt be shut off completly?

A custom tune will shut the AFM off. That much I'm sure of and I've seen some L99s on here that are pushing the power you're looking for and I haven't heard of problems yet. I have an L99 myself and plan to go with the Edlebrock S/C. I think you'll be safe with 500RWHP from what I've read in various threads.

I think the failure point is with the A6 tranny @ 550+ rwhp...
Hopefully a good transmission tune will be available soon, not sure if that will solve all of the issues though.

FWIW, I have also heard from a builder that the A6 transmission will have problems over time with over 525-550hp going through it.

Send Tranny to Circle-D in Texas for beef up. They told me around 1600.00 + shipping would get you able to hold around 700HP.

The L99 is just a detuned LS3 with AFM the block and internals are the same, I got this info from Chevy Hi Performance the article is LS Engines decoded

I haven't seen a supercharger yet that will make 550-600 rwhp on an L99. Try Turbo

You're hitting the limits here before you need forged internals...

Here is a graph of a L99/A6 car we recently finished. It is running a Procharger D1SC @ 8psi, Kooks 1 7/8 headers, Kooks cats, Magnaflow 3" catback, custom tune. We have had great success with the A6, but like all parts it has it's limits. I would recommed leaving the vvt, but turning off the afm. I am confident that there are quite a few combinations that will get you to your desired hp goal. Just keep in mind that at 550-650rwhp you may need a transmission overhaul/build in the next 12-18 months depending on driving style, transmission tuning, HP level, and how cool you can keep it. Hope this helps.

Tune Time Performance also has an L99 with a Procharger putting down some real nice numbers without being fully forged as far as I know.

Jannetty has a L99 that ran a 10.99 @124mph
im sure its making more then 550wHP...
u just need a boost a pump past 500wHP
also internal arent the same as LS3.. the L99 has a lower compression (10.4:1) which is safer for boosting..
only thing is I don't know what the stock auto tranny can handle and for how long..

The 10 sec Jannetty car is mine and were at 550/550 so far with no issues. Well traction is but I think I just solved that with the SJM 17's and slicks. 20 plus passes at the track on drag radials and no problems. We used meth instead of a boost a pump. So I still have the stock pump, internals and drivetrain. If it's setup right there won't be any issues. The car should go 10.70's or 80's on the slick. Currently it's at 10 psi. It's also mph @ 126.50.
