Catalytic Question

What are the positives and negatives of not running cats? Even high flow cats. There are no emmision inspections in South Florida.

I'm getting ready to install a header back exhaust. should I just leave the cats out and get it tuned as such?

Somewhere on here a performance shop stated that gains from running no cats was minimal at best. Wish I could find it...

EDIT: Here it is!! Good 'ole Jannety:

So no horsepower gains. But I could save the money for the cats. Are there any negative effects or problems?

Even if you don't have emissions testing, you can still get fines for removing them (ranging anywhere from $500-$5,000 ), will still fail visual inspections (which shops are still suppose to do during inspections even if they don't have to do emissions), and you can get noise ordinance tickets as running no cats is loud as hell.

Imo the $150-$200 you spend on buying them is cheaper then the possible fines you can get in the future.

best bet is to get a header kit with high flow cats... that way you get the visual and mechanical effects of having them, and the performance gains of not having them... kind of a compromise between keeping it legal and getting the most hp out of the engine.

Plus you can end up with a very nasty film on the back of the car with no cats. Been there, done that....

It does come off with a little effort but still a PITA

Some cars really stink without cats. Must be something in the efi programming, but some cars gas you out with no cats. The safest best is a complete system with cats, then you can always get some off road pipes also to try once in a while. But if you buy a complete system, including the race cats isn't much more $$$, and they flow dang near the same as without.

OK that pretty much answers that question. Thank You for the info.

Think I'll just get the high flows.

By the way. We don't have car inspections down here. Visual or otherwise.

Unless I read it wrong, he compared no cats to highflow cats. What would be the difference between STOCK cats and no cats?
