Shaking, swaying at freeway speeds

I haven't taken my car out on the freeway too often (I'm only around 400 miles). But the two or three times I've been cruising on the freeway lately, I've noticed a shaking or swaying around 55 to 75 mph. I haven't driven faster than that. I'm worried, because I haven't read anything about this on this forum. And it doesn't feel like wheel balance.

Could it be an alignment issue? It would be sad if my car came delivered from the factory out of alignment.

you may want to take your dealer for a ride and see what they think.

If your car is shaking, you either have a tire that is separated or 1 or more tires that are out of balance.. An alignment will not cause your car to shake..

Separated tire? Sounds like I would know about that. I'm pretty sure nothing is separated. And it's not the wind. It's happened on separate occasions with different types of weather. All in California where the weather isn't severe at all.

It looks like I'll have to take my car back to the dealer and ask them to do the wheel balance and alignment. Thanks.

Have them look over the whole suspension, too. It sounds like the did a poor pre-delivery check of your car.

There is actually a TSB for this issue.

Mine was my Pirelli scorpion ice and snow tires, and being a little out of balance.

Really? What was wrong with the tires? Just the balance? Or something bigger.

In my case, I was a bit out of balance, and the Pirelli scorpion ice and snow due to the tread makes a little vibration. It was a lot better once I left the dealer though.

Right lane, left lane, or across all lanes? Trucker groves?

That is a good observation. With the summer tires I felt a slight vibration this weekend on I96 and thought I might need to get the summer tires re-balanced. It turns out, it was the right lane that was doing it.

I moved into the left lane and it stopped doing it.

I then remained in the right lane. Good thing, as the idiots were following too close in the left lane, and there was a 3 car accident a little later.

Whoa. Glad that worked out for you.

It happened on multiple freeways. So I don't think it was a lane thing.

I ask because, at times, it feels like there is a phantom driver taking the wheel and pulling one way or another.

I do rememeber (way back when) a thread about this and the consensus was the big a** tires are more prone to follow grooves and hollows in the road.

Really? That could be it. I would still feel better if Chevy checked it out. But that does sound like the issue I'm having. That's a really good description, though... it does feel like a phantom driver pulling the car left and right.

Took my car to Chevy, they insisted it wasn't wheel balance or the suspension. They checked the alignment and "discovered a toe setting out of adjustment." Sweet. On my way home I noticed my steering wheel was back to normal, and it doesn't pull to the right anymore.

I'll take it out on the freeway soon and see if that was the swaying issue, too.

It's probably the sad ass condition of the freeways in CA, seems you can't go 100' down the road without dodging a future Grand Canyon....

Went back on the freeway. Looks like I had two issues. One of them is completely fixed. The alignment is straight as a string, now.

However, the car still has that phantom driver around 75-80 mph. But... it might be because of the engine/drivetrain. Because I only noticed it when I was in-gear. It might be because the engine/drivetrain is overworked trying to accelerate (even a little bit) in gear 5 and 6 at that point. I don't think it did it in 4th gear.

I'll have to keep troubleshooting. Stay tuned.

I had two problems. One was poor alignment, the other... you nailed it. I have been driving more on the freeway, and it only has this problem on one freeway (Highway 85 in San Jose). My car is good to go. Thanks, folks.

Vibration at 55-70

Ok so i go into the dealer and ask for a oil change and a tire check(slight vibration at 55-70). they tell me to go have a cup of coffee in the dealer cafe and wait for the car. 3.5 HOURS Later they tell me i will have to make a appointment to leave the car for 1.5 to 2 days so they can find the problem with the vibration. The service rep hands me a paper: Document ID- 2439076
titled: #PIE0058A: EI10067- Engineering Information Shake/Vibration in Steering wheel/Body or Seat of vehicle while driving at highway speeds on smooth roads (apr 7,2010)

Long story short if you have a vibration issue plan on bring it in. it may not be your tires.

On the plus side I do love my 2ss/rs

have fun and enjoy the ride.
