The engine is the exact same. The difference in the two is available and standard options. The engine is still the 6.2L

The V6 camaro has the 3.6L 304 HP engine. The SS Camaro is the 6.2L V8 you get the L99 engine with 400 Stock HP with the SS automatic transmission or the LS3 426 HP stock with the Six speed manual transmission.

If you want to see what they can do go and check out Hennessy racing www.hennesseyperformance.com
they have done all kinds of great stuff with the camaro and really tested them. You can also check out videos on youtube. just search for Hennessy Camaro and you will find all kinds of information.

Nothing in the LS3 is forged. People have been doing just fine with up to about 550hp. I believe the rumors are that at aroudn 550-600 you will need to beef up your rear end first. I don't think anyone has blown an engine yet, so no one knows how much it will handle at this time.

The 2010 SS uses the LS3 engine - the same that has been used in Corvettes for a few years now. To answer your question - the engine is not forged but despite this fact they can take a huge amount of abuse. The LS3 will easily put out up to 800hp and can be considered moderately safe. Mine is conservative at 700 crank HP and you would never even think it had any more horsepower than it left the factory with. If you built it correctly, fuel the engine properly you will be safe to limits well above what is needed for street use.

To add to that...many supercharger manufacturers offer their own warranties...AND they test their systems pretty extensively before selling them.

Blowing up engines with a proper supercharger kit is not common.

It'll be just fine if you supercharge it. When you start getting up and over 600 is when you should start worrying about swapping some stuff out.

I've heard from various people that the engine will handle about 600rwhp safely. You'll need to start looking at fuel solutions at that point. If you just go with something Like Jannetty Racing's street brawler package you can have massive amounts of power, OEM quality and don't have to worry about beefing up anything in the car. On the LS3 that package will give you about 560rwhp and on the L99's somewhere in the range of 500-510rwhp.

If you get a base SS and S/C it you'll be up there with the GT500 and still have a couple thousand $ saved.

I would be more worried about the tranny and the IRS more than the motor.

Kyle's pushing just a hair over 600 rwhp with the procharger kit.

I imagine anything more than that and you'll want to start going through the block to beef up the usual suspects

Ricer burners are measured in CCs and liters. American engines are measured in cubic inches.

The LS3 engine is 378 cubic inches.

Thanks Bill, for showing all the non-believers a 331" small block Chevy powered car could outrun a 426 Hemi powered car. Thanks for the tube chassis, the splay valve small block cylinder heads, the strut front suspension, and the dry sump oiling system. I applaud your becoming the once king of the NA motors builders. Most of all, thanks for the racing memories and inspiring many young guys to follow in your footsteps.

On a side note, the early 2010 SS's had issues with the half shafts. Some people were snapping them at the drag strip without much in the way of modds. I think Chevy addressed the issues later that same model year, however. I have a 1SS, LS3 with 77k miles. I bought it in December of 2009 and haven't had any issues, but I'm still stock power and have only had it on the strip 2 or 3 times.
