I am hearing a rumor that this hp number might be in part do to rating the V6 Camaro for 91 octane over having it rated for 87 octane.

Pure speculation at this point though. So take that with a grain of salt.

You CAN have it both ways. Doesn't need to be a POWER passenger seat adjustment....just a manual pump lever on the passenger side to raise the seat height. Virtually no added weight (possibly a pound or two)

There still could be plenty of things we are not being told. For example from 98-02 there were a lot of little changes made here and there that were never advertised...i.e. different cams/exhaust manifolds/ intake manifolds/injectors/differnt heads/different block (for a few cars.) throttle body differences/ pcm changes/ egr removal.....just to name a few.

Being said from 98-02 there were 0 gear options for the fbody for manuals. The auto had 1 gear option. A 3.23.

Now there could very well be changes to the motor that we will never know about until people start tearing the motors down. So yes hp could go up based off of new parts (without gm advertising it) or they could swap out two parts make the motor more efficient then de-tune it to make the same hp.

Point being since they didnt say anything we will never know until it comes out and we tear them down.

"Good things come to those who wait."

That's why patience is a virtue; you either have the willpower to wait it out and see...or you get what you want the exact moment you want it and don't look back. There will always be a new, better, upgraded version of whatever is on the market at the time.

It's the same thing that happened when everyone rushed out to be the first to own an iPhone and then they came out with the new iPhone a year later that was twice as good for a lot less money.

You kind of have to expect it, really.

We can hope but not going to be easy or cheap. You would need a new dash an d windsheild. I have it on my GTP and it's the only thing missing from my 2SS, that and a full tank of gas.

what was done to V6, a GM AF CAI? or maybe a 'fuse pull'?

I do like the SG in a V8, though..

how about offering a convertible in limited SG

For those saying what did you expect from a 2nd year model? Ford did the exact same thing. Redesigned the car last year, and changed the engines this year and just changed the engines this year.
yeah, but thats because their v6 up to that point had been a carry-over - when they came out withe the 2010 camaro, a new engine came out for it as well (yes, i know its on the cts, but you see what I'm saying)

If they came out with our v6 camaro and put in the v6 malibu motor or something, then yes, they would have needed to step up, but fact of the matter is they had the right lump in the car to begin with, so why complain about changing it so soon

The Mustang was lucky this year because there was a big HP gap between the GT and the GT500.
Just my opinion.

While I kind of agree with you. GM did under rate the 98-02 fbodies hp so it woudlnt upset the vette guys. Thats the common consensus amung the fbody world anyways.

Having the HUD, I would like to see another Blue, a suspension package option and some additional wheel choices that don't cost almost $5K.

Here's the official press release:

Chevrolet supports Camaro’s consumer momentum with exciting updates for 2011

312 horsepower for V6, expanded availability of Synergy color and heads-up display new for 2011

2010-04-08

The 2010 model year proved to be a very successful and exciting year for the segment-leading Chevrolet Camaro. For the 2011 model year, Chevrolet looks to expand the car’s popularity among consumers with the introduction of additional features.

“We are pleased with Camaro’s success in the market during its first year of production,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President, Chevrolet Marketing. “The 2010 model year has been a banner year for us, and we plan to build on this momentum.”

Horsepower increase for V6 engine

The 2011 Camaro V-6 engine completed SAE certification testing and is now officially rated at 312 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 278 lb-ft of torque at 5100 rpm. This rating is eight horsepower higher than the previous year and also marks an increase in torque from the 2010 rating of 273 lb-ft.

“The 304 horsepower in the 2010 Camaro was actually a conservative rating on our end,” said Tom Sutter, GM V-6 chief engineer. “But we knew already that this award-winning engine produced at least the amount of power we stated, but now we’ve gone the extra step in certifying the engine for this application and have verified an additional 8 horsepower.”

The 3.6-liter V-6 with variable valve timing (VVT) and direct injection employs four independent cam phasers to change the timing of valve operation as operating conditions such as rpm and engine load vary. The result is linear delivery of torque, with near-peak levels over a broad rpm range, and high specific output (maximum horsepower per liter of displacement) supporting overall engine response and drivability. When combined, direct-injection and VVT enable an unmatched combination of power, efficiency and low-emissions in gasoline V-6 engines.

SAE certification is a voluntary power and torque certification procedure developed by the SAE Engine Test Code committee. This procedure (J2723) ensures fair, accurate ratings for horsepower and torque by allowing manufacturers to certify their engines through third-party witness testing. Chevrolet was the vehicle brand to begin using the procedure.

Synergy color to be made available across the lineup

Earlier this year, Chevrolet introduced the Camaro Synergy Special Edition which is based off the concept displayed at the 2009 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The Synergy Special Edition is limited to a 1LT model, but the Synergy Green exterior color will be made available on all trim levels for a limited run during the 2011 model year.

“When we looked at the overwhelmingly positive reaction we received from SEMA attendees and consumers on Synergy Green, making the color available across the board was pretty much a no-brainer,” said John Fitzpatrick, Camaro Marketing Manager.

Customers will be able to order this color for a manufacturer suggested retail price of $325.

Head-Up Display

Already available on the Chevrolet Corvette, the 2011 Camaro will become the second Chevrolet vehicle to offer the popular Head-Up Display.

Camaro’s Head-Up Display will include:
  • Vehicle speed
  • Tachometer
  • Compass
  • Outside air temperature
  • Manual Paddle Shift Gear Indicator (if equipped)
  • OnStar Turn-by-Turn
  • Audio functions
  • Phone information
  • Selected gear
  • Turn signal indicators
  • High-beam indicator signal
  • Vehicle messages

“Head-Up Display has been a very frequent customer request” said Cheryl Pilcher, Camaro Product Manager. “People familiar with the HUD system simply love it. It truly enables drivers to keep their eyes on the road.”

Production of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro begins on June 7, 2010.

Me too. I've always been puzzled that they saw fit to include heated side mirrors in the 2LT/2SS but not a power passenger seat.

Am I reading this right? Does this say that the ACTUAL power output is unchanged? Just that they rated it conservatively before and now have certified it a bit higher?

If so, that's great and all, but not what I would consider an "exciting" change for 2011...

Umm I said why I cared about it in the sentence you quoted. Cheaper aftermarket parts due to more suppliers. Instead of getting hosed $600 for a set of gears I could get them from GM cheaper or vice versa.

Competition drives down aftermarket parts prices. Aftermarket parts make my car faster. Competition makes my car faster for cheaper = happy wife = happy me w/ faster car.

I'm not really surprised by the lack of upgrades or new features being given for the '11 model simply for the fact that GM got everything right in the 5th gen. I know there are lots of things we would like to see for future installments but I honestly can't complain and I'm more excited knowing I dont have to trade in my Camaro just get the newest toys.

Good news anyways!

If I bought the "limited production run, will only be available on 1LT" synergy green, I'd feel pretty shafted right now.

Hud = awesome. Period, amen.

V6 hp gains - it's the muscle wars all over again, boys and girls! I love it!

My neighbor is going to be so pissed when he hears that my 304 is actually 312 and just 3 short of his 07 Mustang GT! That, plus I have a CAI, headers and exhaust. I think I'll be able to take him at the track!
