My IROC and the restoration pics

Here are a couple of pictures I scanned this morning of my IROC Camaro that I painted at home in a make shift paint booth on my patio. The first tow pictures are of the car when I first bought it. It was strait with minor door dings. The third picture shows my start of the restoration.

More to come if you want to see how it turned out.

Here are some more pictures. I started block sanding and taking out all of the dings. The car was sanded down to the original primer then I painted a sealer primer over the car in my home made paint booth seen below. The hood was taken down to metal and I found some bondo as seen in the picture below.

When I painted the car it was a real hot summer day and I shot four coats of PPG black over the IROC. The following day I wet sanded the entire vehicle. All of the removed parts got a complete going over and I hung them and painted them off the car.

These next photos are after the wet sanding and I started to buff the paint out with Safe Cut by the Wax Shop.

OK - It looks good, but the picture really don't do the car justice. I spent 3 months of every night and weekends working on the car with my wife's help.

While painting the car I had the wrong mask and got paint poisoning. For a couple weeks I felt nauseous and off balance.

Next I needed to put on the new emblems and decals and rocker striping. I use to go garage saling and one day came accross a guy selling IROC Z door decals a pair of brand new OEM discontinued decals I paid $10 for the pair. What luck.

You can see the headliner is in bad shape in one of the pictures. I ended up buying material and foam then pulling the old headliner out and removing the wore out stuff and restoring it to like new condition. Unfortunately I never took any pictures of the interior completed.

'85 or '86? Wife had an '86 black with red interior it was bad fun and fast back in the day. It was her first car (freakin spoiled brat). Father in law told me that it was a 5.7 but my research says it was a 305. Never found a 302 that I didn't eat for a snack in fact ran with some later model 350 IROC's man that was a LONG time ago....good times! Thanks for the pics Allen!

This one is a '87 with a 5 spd and 305 TPI. I wish it was a 350 IROC, but sadly it wasn't. My mom worked with a lady that owned a white IROC with the 350, I think she still owns it in fact.

Painting was certainly an experience. I will probably never do it again. Too much of a health risk.

I think if I still had this car today I would have put a Ram Jet 350 crate motor in it and twin turbo. The 305 was at 102k on this car and still ran fine, but lacked the kind of horse power I think it should have had. I was lucky enough to be working for Ron Tonkin Chevrolet back when these cars where on the show room floor. I would walk out there to check out the cars and drool over them. These where the next Gen Camaro that I thought GM did right. Now the new Gen 5 model is the car I want to drive.

If you look at the first picture in this thread you will see my black chevy Tracker I just bought new at that time in 2000. I still drive that vehicle today, but it may get retired next year and replaced with a Camaro.
