Camaro in Finland

For starters, Finland is not situated in the continental europe so how about adding a new regional area to the International Regions, next to Sweden perhaps?... anyways,

Begun the registeration process for a black 2SS/RS.
Bought it a week ago from a local dealer who acquired it from Mexico, with just 32 km on the odo.

I Finland we have this thing called "reilu meininki", which loosely translated into the automotive world means that cars, which do not have the ECE approval (especially american cars not made to european market) are dangerous, illegal and so on...
Basically, the only cars accepted here are Finnish and Russian-made (and Finland does not make any car)

FMVSS or better still CMVSS certificate would be nice as it would eliminate the need to modify many of the about 60-80 items that now need to be modified in order to get this Camaro (and all others sold new here) "safe" and road legal here.

Another "reilu meininki" issue (which I won´t get much into right now) is the price of a car like this.
Suffice to say, that what cost ~40 000 USD in the dealers will be about triple the price when it´s all finally approved road legal here, with all the taxes´n´sht.

So, the registeration process has begun.
No use in posting pictures here now as we all know what the 2010 2SS/RS looks like when it left the factory.
Maybe I´ll post pictures of the idiotic changes to be made

Good luck with your efforts to register it in Finland. I'm originally from finland and i know how hard it is to modify or import cars there and get them registered/inspected. That's why i love to drive and modify my camaro here, hell we don't even have annual inspection here in Indiana!

Congrats on the new car!! Did I hear you correctly, only cars allowed are Finnish and Russian, but Finland does not make cars? That's funny stuff right there.

No, all cars are allowed, it's just those european emission/safety standards are so different (which is stupid) than American standard's, that it makes almost impossible to import an American car there, unless it's made for export with all neccessary modifications and certificates from factory. Market is so small, that i guess automakers here don't want to deal with it, specially with low market share models (like camaro).

Russian car's get special treatment with taxes and safety standard's there because of Russian/Finnish trade. There's just no good Russian car's to buy, period. They are JUNK. I don't know, if they even import them to Finland any more.

At least that was the case there when i moved here in States 10 year's ago. I guess it got worse since huh....

Finland don't have their own automaker's, everything is imported. They put together some models for automakers, like Porsche Boxster i think.

Boost basically got things right.
But the best thing about this legislation is that if you live overseas (USA) for over 6 months and own this Camaro over 6 months, then return here and bring your car with you, the only modifications you need to do are the installations of the rear fog light and side turn signals and the car is road legal.
Really...

I´ll post pictures later

No news yet, still waiting on lights to arrive (among other things) to get the modifications started.
No taxes yet.
Been as our daily driver, got 3900+ km on the odo.
Have to say, much better to drive long distances than the 4gen.

Very happy with the purchase so far

Got a *MVSS and a bunch of TÜV-papers which cleared A LOT of the "problem areas" and thus only a few modifications were needed.
I´m quite taken by it, really.
Feared it would be much worse
Modifications included:
* side turn signals on front fenders, of course
* rear fog light (removed the left back up light and planted the (red) fog light in it´s place inside the bumper, looks good)
* we have to be able to level the driving lights from inside the cabin according to load, this was done by installing motors to the lamps and a switch inside the cabin
* e-approved mirrors

But;

it´s all done now, and inspected, and most importantly APPROVED
Waiting for the papers to arrive and for the taxes

Got a special license plate waiting as well

A few pics maybe later this weekend.

But, we´re a happy camper now

Congratulations my fellow Finnish Camaro owner!!
I hope to have mine on the road in Finland by end of August or early September. I am currently living in Eureka, Northern California, but I am about to relocate back home so the car will be shipped by end of July. I have put about 15000 miles on mine since May 23rd 2009 and I have loved every mile in it!
Luckily I don't have to deal with same amount of idiotic stuff that you have gone through, only the turn signals and the rear fog light. Please let me know what type of turn signals you have installed and how the wiring is done (from what I have heard it is a little more to than running a wire to it!).

Congrats FIN-2010 with your mods, you did great job with them! Don't look that i'm re-locating anytime soon back to Finland, but i will save this post in case i'm taking my Camaro to homeland. Enjoy fellow Finn!

Thanks.
All wiring was done professionally, so they should be good for decades to come.
This BÄD SS is going to be driven throughout the year so need to buy winter tires, gonna mount them on these factory rims.
Thought of getting black AR TT M´s for summer.

And hey, who guessed about the taxes?
Feared they would be like 36.000 $ or something... they were just over 16

Should get the plates this week, hopefully today. Maybe a pic with them later on...
