PASSkey III theft-deterrent system

Does anyone know how exactly this alarm system works and what features it has?

The only thing I could find about the PASSKey III at a blog....

"...unless you have the original, factory issued key, it cannot be stolen, unless it is towed.
General Motors calls their anti theft system a VATS system which stands for Vehicle Anti Theft System. A locksmith cannot bypass it, nor can a car thief. It uses a transponder system that electronically reads the key codes that are imbedded in the key. It cannot be overridden and if you need another key, you will have to take the vehicle to the dealer to get one, as you cannot copy the key.
This is a very complicated alarm system that involves the key, ignition switch, transponder, fuel pump, radio, and anti theft modules, so it is almost "theft proof". I have worked auto theft for years and have been consulting for nearly 40 years and I have not found one thief yet that could bypass this system. Yes, the car can be towed away, but they will not be able to get it running. The vehicles so equipped that are stolen are stolen because the owner left the keys in the car, or gave the keys to the crook. The system is that good. You need to remember one thing though, because of the complexity of the system, once in a while you will get an electronic "gremlin" and might have problems with a warning light. If you do have such a problem, just take it back to a GM dealer to have it checked out."

Ouch and here I thought $30 for a copy for my Z28 because of the chip was expansive.

Will the car also be installed with the Magnavolt system?

So, does this mean I can forget about the aftermarket security system?

Also, anyone know if the car comes with one or two keys?

Thanks!

it should come w/ @ least 2 keys (i've never seen a new car NOT come w/ a spare or 2)

as for the costs - i don't know specifically but i'd bet on over $80 for a new one w/ activation @ the dealership

I used to copy keys @ a hardware store and had to send people to their dealer all the time. i did learn something from a few customers tho

you can ussually buy a BLANK on ebay for fairly cheap (HAS the chip, just not tuned to a car), take it to the hardware store and have it copied for a couple dollars, and then have the dealership program it.

as long as its a standard car key and not a laser cut this works, i've done it.

was born that year /blushes

and i believe as a system all the cars in gm's lineup are equiped with some sort of passkey system, that does not stop people from stealing whats inside the vehicle though

Unless the new PassKey is better than the one in the 4th gens, I wouldn't trust it that much. The one in the 4th gens is pretty easy to bypass.

Yeah,

As Gotham states, there are gremlins... My mom has a 2003 Malibu, and the immobilizer has gone off 3 times since we bought the car. What the immobilizer is, is a system that will let the engine turn over for about 5 seconds and then it cuts out. And after 3 attempts like that, the system goes into lockdown. It won't even turn over anymore.

We've had to have the car towed back to the dealer to have them fix it.

The VATS key your refuring to is just using a resistor to verify the real key has been inserted. There is 15 different resistance values/"chips". The new security keys have a transponder inbedded in the base of the key and to program it to your car you usualy just insert the old key and start the car, then remove it and insert the new key and start it. Word of advise, always get a copy of your keys made before you lose them! I promise it will save you time and money.
