GM to invest $850+ million to build new V8s
Yeah! Maybe the next gen Camaro will still have a V8!
Link: GM to build new V8 General Motors Co. said Tuesday it will invest more than $850 million to upgrade five North American factories to make its next-generation V8 engines more fuel efficient. The new V8s will differ from the current versions by using direct injection and a new combustion system, spokeswoman Sharon Basel said. The next-generation engines will also be lighter. GM will build them exclusively from aluminum, compared with the current versions' aluminum and iron makeup, Basel said. All of the engines will be able to run on E85 ethanol. To build the engines, GM will renovate or retool powertrain factories in Tonawanda, N.Y.; Bay City, Mich.; Bedford, Ind.; Defiance, Ohio; and St. Catharines, Ontario. GM uses its current V-8 family of engines in full-sized pickups, SUVs, vans and some performance cars, Basel said. “There is no doubt that a major differentiator going forward will be powertrain technology,” said Michael Robinet, vice president at research firm CSM Worldwide in Northville, Mich. “Heavy investment and improved fuel economy will be on every company's agenda.” |

I hope these new V8s are as easy a swap as the LS-series engines.

I think we'll see this Gen V make an appearance in the current generation Camaro, much like the LT to LS switch of the last gen.

love. my. car.

I think its funny that they mention that the engines will be able to run on E85... Because all car engines can already run on E85, it's just that the hoses and other external components will corrode if you don't have a E85 car... I remember hearing it was under $200 in parts to make a car E85 compatible... For example, my Mazda pickup truck has the exact same engine as the same model year Ford Ranger. However, my truck is a E85 flex fuel vehicle... The Ranger isn't. It's all because they used cheaper parts in the Ranger... kind of funny.
But I am REALLY excited to see that we're still going to invest new money on V8 technology. I will miss the low rumble of V8s if they ever do disappear. I guess I could probably just buy a diesel, those things have quite the throaty growl

The best thing about this is now instead of my Camaro being a garage queen I can drive it like I stole it and get a 6th gen with a V8!!

If I understood correctly, the next trucks are the first to get the Gen V small block, followed by more vehicles.

I'm sure the "new" DI V8 will debut in the new Corvette. So maybe.... the DI V8 will make it into the Gen5 Camaro before the model change.
GM is also revamping the entire truck/SUV V8 line as well. Ford is not waiting for the CAFE deadline, so maybe GM will intoduce these in the next few years. Sounds like most of the design work might be done and they are ready to spending tooling $ for production.
