L99 VS. LS3

I realize the LS3 is paired with the 6 speed manual and the L99 is with the automatic. What is the difference between the two engines? I have the automatic. I just installed the Borla axle back S-type exhaust. The sound is driving me crazy when I'm cruising along and it shifts between 5th and 6th gears.......It makes a sputtering, drone sound as I speed up and slow down....I was told by Borla that I would need to install at least the X pipe to get the better sound. Do I need to go with Headers, also?
I have a C6 Vette with the LS2 and 6 speed, plus Dynatech Supermaxx headers and B&B exhaust...great sound.

Again, what is the difference between the two engines? And, any advice on why the automatic sounds so strange?

L99 has AFM (active fuel management) which annoyingly changes the engine parameters to run on 4 cylinders to save gas at 'cruising' speeds, although it comes on much earlier than people want. It also has slightly less hp at 400 vs. the LS3's 426.

the sound you might be getting is the AFM kicking on and it's not going to be a throaty V8 sound. Otherwise, I'd go with installing the X pipe and headers.

I agree. It's AFM. If you're not worried about "potential" warranty issues, get a tune and turn it off or use a handheld like the DiabloSport Predator. I turned mine off and bought the Corsa LS3 exhaust and it's awesome!

probably the biggest difference in the two engines is the cam.

If you got the money... I'd do that for sure! But tuning out the AFM will solve your basic problem. You'd probably need a tune after getting headers anyway.

If you get a tune and something happens you'll lose your whole power train warranty.

"Flashing" it back to stock settings really doesn't help, as they just connect it to a main computer and see everything that has been done to it.

That's why you go to your dealer and ask them to recommend a tuner to you. It works for me at least. I'm really cool with my dealer, but anyone that wants to get a tune just ask your dealer and maybe they'll point you in the right direction while maintaing your warranty. This works with modifications also.

The four major differences are the AFM, cam, variable valve timing, and 10.4:1 compression for the L99 auto vs 10.7 for the LS3 Manual. If I'm correct.

Here are some links to the specs-

Racing your "STOCK" vehicle at the drag strip also voids your warranty!

As everyone pointed out it is AFM. I tuned mine out but another option is to get a resonated x-pipe like Magnaflow makes. It is under $100 shipped.

Actually the cam isn't that big of difference. The realdifference IMO is the AFM lifters which limit rpms and the VVT which advances and retards timing to increase torque under the curve. So although the L99 doesn't have the same peak numbers as an LS3 it does have better power under the curve.

We have a local Chevy dealer that has been sending cars to a local tuner for tuning. As far as I know, if you use that tuner to tune your car, they will stand behind your warranty.

The dealer might but GM will not if they find out.

Why did GM use different engines for the manual and auto? I kind of wish my car had AFM.
