What size headers to go with cam??

Later this summer(June or July) I am thinking of sending my car over to MTI Racing to have a cam swap done. I was just wondering what size headers I should put on with it. Here are the details of the swap: Car is a daily driver, was thinking of putting in a stage 2(since a stage 1 is not that much louder than stock). Right now I have Borla S-Type Axle back and a Halltech CAI.

So what do you think?? MTI only has 1 7/8 on their website.

Thanks for any input.

1 7/8 all the way.

please do not put 1 3/4 headers on your car. this has been discussed many times before. I have yet to see a legitimate reason to put a 1 3/4 header on any setup for these cars (providing a 1 7/8 is an option)

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Thanks. Just wanted to make sure, because some people said 1 3/4 was better with a cam. And is headers and a cam too loud for daily driving??

Those are the people that you don't want to take car advice from.

It kind of depends on the specs of your cam. In all honestly, it shouldn't. I daily drive my car, and it has 1 7/8 longtubes, no cats, 3" kooks exhaust, and a decent sized cam on a tight lsa.

Checkout the Texas Speed 1 7/8 exhaust system, it's complete from front to back of the car & sell for a awesome deal! Checkout my older posts with dyno, pics & sound clips!

FYI, I have a 10 second car that currently has 1 3/4 headers. I'd just go with what the builder wants to use.

i have the thorley long tubes that are 1 3/4" and i'll tell ya.. it made a HUUUGE difference in power and sound from my ADM offroad downpipes. WOW! Lovin it.. and dont let an installer do it.. i had mine installed and test driven in under 2 hours and I am no mechanic but i know my way around a garage and tools. :-)

I am also doing a 112LSA cam that is a monster as well.

who spec'd your cam?

and i'm assuming since you don't have heads, that you did not check ptv clearance? if you did, what was it?

and how much power did you put out, if you dont mind me asking?

Danhr, I was just busting your balls. If I knew that I was going to do a blower there is no doubt that I would have choosen at least an 1 7/8" or even a 2". I still think about changing them to a larger size daily. Last year when I got them I was still a bolt on car. I know that I'm leaving something on the table.

My cam hasnt been installed yet it will be in the shop on the 25th.. and I cant tell you who spec'd it because they dont want to blow their secret.. but I'll say its been installed on several cars with stock heads and the P/V clearance is not a problem. ill post numbers as soon as I have them.

this cam setup with longtubes and catback and Cold air has ranged from 465-480rwhp and 415-440rwtq

dan by the way.. your setup sounds GREAT! .. I saw your idle video on youtube

well i didn't think it would be a problem really.... was just curious on how much the clearance was. I have a VERY similar cam laying around, that I was going to run on my L92 418, but I might swap it out into my 2010 ss. My heads are milled a good bit though. It should have about the same PTV clearance as your cam, was just going to use your clearances to get an idea.

Not sure if Brett@XPRacing will check my clearances or not on this cam install. If he does I will gladly pass my info your way.

if you are not doing heads, it is doubtful. Especially if he has put that cam in other cars before.

Could you pm me some contact information?

Nothing wrong at all with going 1 3/4. There's a thread on here that showed a camaro with all 3 sizes and the HP gains were a mere 3-5 HP between each size. Bottom line is what you're end goal is. Anything over say 600RWHP I'd go with 1 7/8, under that and 1 3/4 will be just fine.

I agree with SSinthedesert.. if you plan on putting a maggie with the 1 3/4 and a cam prepare for a 6-10rwhp difference which isnt even noticeable on the butt dynos! ;-) hehe

Both of yall are missing the point though. The price difference between 1 3/4 and 1 7/8 is ZERO. That means you get 6-10hp FOR FREEE.

well considering i got my 1 3/4 for $650 jethot coated and the midpipes shipped.. i got them for 1/2 of kooks or TSP or ARH. these thorleys have dyno'd great numbers. Price was my #1 concern when it came down to HP per $1.00
