Ignition on the dashboard

One of the things I LOVED about my '68 was the ignition was straight ahead on the dash.

Wondering how hard it would be to mod a new one to do the same..

hmm....

I doubt that you could do it because of the ignition/steering wheel interlock and the ability of the sensor to read the micro chip code in the key fob.

If you knew how many knees were jammed into the key during crashes back in those days you may change your mind.

what if you still use the key by placing it in the ignition and turning it to the on position and then have a push button on the dash to actually start the motor. i thought thats how the cars in the 50s were you had a key and a push button start.

I love that about my 67 Chevelle. The ignition key on the dash, how cool is that. My 70 and 71 Chevelles have it on the column. I think 68 was the last year GM did that

You know I though push button would be cool, but the Genesis and Altima I drove had that and it's not even one-touch. You've got to hold it in like a freakin turn-key ignition. I mean honestly, my Cobalt has a key but it has 1-touch too. At least the Camaro has 1-touch, I'd rather that than push button.

The C6 Vette push button ignition works very well. Just push and release. It cranks and starts on it's own after that. No need to hold in the button. That's one feature I miss from my C6 and wish they had integrated into the new Camaro.

You don't have to hold the key when you start it. Just give it a quick twist and let go. It'll take care of itself from there.

i thought that that little blank spot on the dash right behing the steering column was suppose to be a push button ignition option, but they decided against it

With as retro as the 5th Gen is, I think the ignition on the dash would have been a no-brainer.......apparently I thought WRONG though.

They started putting the ignition back on the Vette's dash in '97.......shoot,even my wife's G6 has it on the dash. Who knows what made them decide to leave it in the steering column?

Obviously I am being sarcastic here. Sorry!

But why not go for a crank on the front. What would be the point of going this way. Just doesn't work for me.

I think all Mustangs have push start....get out and push!

Seriously, adding a push button may add extra crap to do to get the car to start. For one, Corvettes use a proximity key. You would need some sort of safety device or mechanism to prevent just any old passerby from hopping in and driving off. So if you add the button you may still need the key placed to "on". So I can't see how that could be done cheaply or without causing more gyrations to get the car to start. JMO

I actually turned off my engine with my knee once by mistake. Granted I was parked reaching for something in the backseat but it was still kind of annoying.
