It's in the last line of 2010 Sin's post, lookup JBL MS-8. Sounds like a sound processor similar to your home theater but the software tweaks it to your listening position. Definitely something I would have bought in my younger, single days. These days, I'll just wait for the good folks in China to make me something cheaper than $800 with a wireless programming screen I don't have to fit somewhere.

Any of you have the "fixed" speakers and amp that have done this?

Here is a question to all who have done this.

Has anyone noticed that after unplugging the center speaker that voice calls seem to not be as loud anymore. I frequently have to turn the volume up to over 30 to hear the person I'm talking to. I don't remember this being an issue when I bought the car, so it just dawned on me that it could be the removal of the speaker.

Good point. Plug it back in and see. Can't say that I truly noticed. But since I listen to the muisc more than talk on the phone, mine will stayed un-plugged.

The difference is HUGE. I was very skeptical about the disabling of a tiny speaker making so much difference. Actually sounds like a premium sound system now.

Thanks!

Also, there isn't any difference in volume in call using bluetooth. Clear and loud at volume 12.

So... After reading through all this I may give it a shot at unplugging.... Here's a question though that I didn't see anyone mention:

Is the increase in performance really because of removing the center speaker, or are we seeing the increase in performance just because of removing a speaker from the Amp -- I mean, wouldn't removing any speaker from the amp in turn boost the signal to the other speakers?

I can see how removing the center can impact stereo, but not overal sound response unless it's redirecting the amp into pushing more juice to the remaining speakers.

Thoughts?

Are you looking for a how to do it video or how it sounds before and after video?

The how to is extremely easy to the point that I would recommend doing it and deciding for yourself if you like the sound with it installed or not.

More of the how to do it video. I played with the settings yesterday and found it got better with most of the settings around 0. But yeah would like to see how to get into the dash, I think i know how just want to see it to be sure.

No video, but you really don't need one. Get a flat interior trim removal tool (a screw driver will work, tape the end up to prevent scratches). Pry the cover off the center speaker. This cover is held in place with 4 clips. One in each corner. Once the cover is off, the speaker is right there and held in place with two screws. Remove the screws and un-plug the speaker. I taped the wire to the speaker so that I didn't lose the wire down the dash. good luck.

This may be slightly off topic but figured it was better then starting a new thread. I have a 2LT, so pretty sure a 9-speaker system. Where the hell are they all? I know I have two 6.5" & two tweeters in the doors, and two 6x9" in the back deck. What about the other three?

Just did this in my PJ's, i didnt feel comfortable cutting anything so i just disconnected he speaker from the grille. Definitely feel like there is an improvement of bass. and definitely sounds better all around.

From the WiKi page:

2010 Boston Acoustics Audio System Specs
(standard on 2LT and 2SS models, available on 1LT and 1SS models)

  • 245-watt
  • 9 Speaker
  • 6.5-inch woofers in each door
  • 1-inch tweeters in A-pillars
  • 3.5-inch center channel speaker (in the upper instrument panel)
  • 7-channel sub-woofer (on rear shelf)
The 7 channel sub woofer is counted as two speakers each.

I didn't cut it either, just unplug and tape it to the speaker. Keeps it from going down the dash or rattling around.

less than a 5 minute job... and WOW! To me a VAST improvement in the stereo separation! To me it seems the sound stage is much more defined... And for the type of music I listen to and the way I like the front and rear balance set this no cost mod is a HUGE improvement! Sorry it took me so long to notice this thread!!! THANKS to the OP!!!

There are 3 tabs at the forward edge (front of the car) so you need to pop both rear tabs first, then as you lift it up it will pop the two fronts and away you go. Obviously you will need to insert the forward edge first when reinstalling...

I must say, I had my doubts but it is def worth doing. Besides destroying the stereo effect, it totally "muddies" the sound... Glad I did it for sure.

Well I thought this was bs. So I tried it and works! Less distortion and sounds much better. I think the center channel would be fine if there was a separate fader for it to where you could just barely have it on? Paired with the front speakers it can't handle the volume. Mine is now unplugged and 30 to 35 on the volume really sounds good now!
