6L80 swap

I want to put some lower gears on my car but I dont want to KILL my MPG either (I know its gunna drop still so dont flame me) So I figure a good solution to that would be swapping in a 6L80 trans. Giving me six gears so I can still have low gears but not have horrible MPG. Anybody know how possible this is? Or if there is a better A6 (possibly A5) to put in my 99 Formula???

The 4L65E can technically be stacked and is capable of 5 forward speeds, but for the most part, I don't think you'll realize a significant increase in mileage by taking the steps necessary, or certainly by swapping and programming required to support the 6L. Final drive ratio in OD with converter locked is certainly sufficient with the 4L, and assuming you have the optional performance axle ratio of 3.23, a good stall converter which retains lockup will make a night and day difference in the performance. For example, my wife's car has 3.42's (was an original M6 car), a Built 4L65, and a 3800 stall- It gets roughly 25mpg on the expressway, and will peel your eyelids back under hard acceleration. I vote spend your money on a Stall and steeper gears, if not already equipped.

Yes, I have the 3.23 Gears I want to go to the 4.10 But I know my cruising RPMS will be wayyy too high and my MPG will be wayyy too low with only 4 gears...thats why I wanted to go to a 6 speed...would it just be better to go to a MT? I know how to drive standard just fine but I heard its more expensive to swap in a MT...that true?

a M6 swap will run roughly $2K on average with all associated parts- If you want to drive a manual, that's an option to consider. I love our M6 cars, but would grow weary in a hurry if that were my daily. Unless you're planning to upgrade to a 12 bolt, 9", S60, etc, you don't want 4.10s. You'll either be spinning nonstop, or if you have tires/suspension (traction) the pinion gear won't have a chance. I vote grab a stall and see how you like the 3.23s, then go 3.42s if you're not satisfied- The wife's car at 3700 lbs runs 6.80's with the Auto and 3.42s, and could be a DD.
