Z28 News!

The owner of the dealer I but my cars from was at a GM meeting this past week to go over new and future models. He said the Z28 was confirmed and he was told could be out as early as 1st Quarter 2011 as a 2012 model. Production was rumored, at the meeting, to be starting Nov - Dec 2010 if all goes well. It was said they want to get the car out with the Verts maybe even earlier. But Gm fully expects to have a Z28 on the streets by mid 2011.They also talked about the new Silverados with their new frames and design. Also the meeting confirmed the new Vette to be due out in 2013 (60th Anniversary) as a 2014 model and they also confirmed the new platform for the 6th Gen Camaro. The 6th Gen is probably gonig to be out 2014 as a 2015 model from what they were told but GM didn't go into to much detail on the 6th Gen. But, it looks like our Z28 is real and is right around the corner!

I trust my dealer and I know the owner for over 15 years and know he wouldn't lie to me. The times and dates are subject to change he told me, but he said a Z28 is no doubt confirmed and is being planned for a 2011 launch as a 2012 model.

I almost always take dealer speculation or insider information with a grain of salt, but with that being said...

The upcoming Gen5 Z28 is one of the worst-kept secrets in the automotive world, ranking right up there with the return of the 5.0 in the Mustang. As the OP, and many others have stated, it is simply a decision (and a good one. IMHO) by the GM marketing group to hold off on any "official" announcement until the convertibles are out and about and there are a good 100-200K base/SS Camaros running the roads.

I know everyone is waiting to hear about z/28, but from if my memory holds true, wasnt the SS always one step ahead of the Z. Doesnt seem right to come out with another that would be faster and better than the SS. I could see making the exterior diffrent, to set them apart, but IMHO I think the SS should be the baddest of the 2.

Historically, the SS was king of the strip and the Z28 was released as a track car to compete in the SCCA trans am race. One rule of the race was, whatever car a manufacturer entered also had to be available to the public. The Z28 had a smaller engine (302) with a longer stroke that revved high and cornered like crazy. Chevy won it in 68 and 69.

So, they could potentially re-release it with that twin turbo V6 with upgraded suspension, which would be a hot, fast car...and fall inline with EPA requirements.

Lotsa guys would be pissed though.

This is great news. I was about to post the same thing. My dealer called me today and said the same thing. My family has purchased cars from him for about 40 years, so I have no reason to believe he would be lying.

Expect the LSA with minor HP bumps, maybe a different tune! That was the rumor floating around.

The SS vs Z28 nameplate is debateable at this point. Alot of guys will argue the smaller output, lighter, track car in the 60's Z28 was better than the heavier, more output, straight line performer in the 60's SS. In the 70's the Z28 was top dog, the 80's was the IROC, the 90's-00's the SS. But right now every Chevy model's top dog is an SS I think the Camaro having the Z28 will be cool and set it apart.

I think Z28 sounds cooler than SS because SS gets thrown around today very easily in lineups. I'm also biased because my father's first car was a Z28.

Also if they made our SS the top dog in performance alot of people would be pissed that the Camaro didn't have a true competitor to the GT500. And for GM to add a Z28 to the lineup and make it like our SS and just make the SS the Z28 we want wouldn't make any sense at this point. Right now the Z28 should be the top dog, the Z28 is the epitomy of Camaro and we need the nameplate back for the 21st Century!

I work at a chevy dealership and ours also says it's gonna be a 2012. so we are looking at mid to late 2011 for Z28s just like all other models. so early 2011 is correct for orders. it may take a while for production to get going depending on how diff. the Z28 is from the v-6 &v-8 camaros. we will see hmm.

My dealer also just confirmed some questions I had for him. The post a month or two ago said that Z28 driveshafts were ordered by the team working on the Z28, this is true. Also the style of the Z28 should look alot like the picture from Motor Trend and the model that was pictured with the Convertible next to it a couple of months ago. It was a silver one in the pic with black or cyber gray stripes on the roof and hood. And, lastly the images of the White prototype car on the track is infact a pre-pro Z28, which if you look close enough to the grill looks very similiar to the Motor Trend pic and the model shown in the other pic. It is a heritage cross shaped grille!

While it's hard to disagree with you I don't think the Z28 is meant to be the type of hit the SS is in the automobile industry. It will be a car that is not mass produced like the SS. It will be GM's answer to the GT500 which is also not mass produced. It is meant to be a rare brute.

I can see the Z28 starting somewhere in the $43k-$45k range. It will no doubt be a bargain for what it is. But it is not meant to be a hit in my mind, the SS is for the everyday guy, affordable and attainable by most in today's market where the average car purchase is somewhere around $29k-$31k. The Z28 is not going to be as attainable, but it will be a bargain performer that is attainable to alot of people looking for cars that perform similiar in other or the same class.
