Absinthe and the USA

Does anyone know, for sure, what the American policy is towards absinthe? I know that as recently as a couple years ago it was illegal to take absinthe into the USA. :(

I'll be driving to Oshawa, Ontario from Alberta (around 3100 kilometers) this August for the Buyers and Builders Meet... and the shorter route is through Michigan.

However...

I'll be bringing some absinthe with me.. sooooo... hence the question. Should I just avoid the short route and stay in Canada?

Merci!

Try to keep your head on straight.

I think it's still illegal here.

it was illegal worldwide a long time ago. Since then it's been regulated and legalized in several parts of the world. I believe the first to re-legalize it was France.

In short, yes it's legal. From what I know there is a company that makes the best you can get on this part of the world near Okland, California.

I knew a guy at a party who had some. I don't know if it was the real thing or not, but it tasted like paint thinner so I only had a very small sip. I don't buy the hallucinogenic effects thing. From what I've read it's a myth from bad 19th century science.

It's an alcohol that was very popular long ago. It was banned due to it potentially killing people. It was kinda like tasty rat poison. lol At this point it's been refined and safe but some localities may have antiquated laws banning it. Much like some places have laws that state a horseless carriage is required to have someone walk so many feet in front of it holding lanterns at night.

Hey. I learned something new on Camaro5 today. lmao

According to the second link, I guess it answers the question.

Commercial distillation of absinthe in the United States resumed in 2007

The story is that Van Gough was drinking absinthe when he cut his ear off. (he was also insane at the time).

It was never illegal in the US. It is illegal to produce and sell, but not to have.

Now you can even import it if there is no wormwood in it (you can buy it in KY, although I haven't seen it in Ohio).

There is no penalty for bringing it over the border, but they can confiscate it. I often have people bring me some when they come back from europe.

Even though it has wormwood, it is not considered bringing illegal drugs over the border.

I also swapped the body for a C2 Z28. (In short I traded it for three cars, a Corvette Z06r, a C2 Camaro Z28, and a Cadillac CTS Summer Performance package 3.6L DI with Aisin 6spd.)

If it's the 180 proof it's illegal(at least to sell). The bar up the street from me sells some that is 120 proof, however.

I believe it is, also, what Hemmingway was drinking when he committed suicide. (The bar by me that sells it has a Hemmingway Theme going on)

The real absinthe is illegal in the states, but you can get a legalized version (think its lower proof, and no wormwood). My friend had some of the legal absinthe at his new years party 2 years back. That shit was so ****ing nasty, could barely and swallow the first shot. The second one just made me sick. Its like drinking regular black liquorice with a mixture of the worst tasting stuff ever. We even did it over a sugar cub like the glass said. I think that made it worse.
