Question Rally stripes - Vinyl vs. Paint

I had my Camaro for a year and now I want to get black bumble bee style rally stripes. The only problem is that I want to know the pros and cons of Vinyl stripes vs. Painted stripes. I see a lot of yall have rally stripes or had them in the past so I would like to get some feedback so I can know which direction to go. Thanks.

I have the black factory vinyl stripes on mine. For me the factory stripes are fine. They are not for everyone though.

The factory stripes are cheaper and I think they look great. The black ones are flat black and if your car is out in the sun a lot I'm not sure how well they will hold up over time. Mines garaged so I'm not worried about if they will get weathered over time.

If you go painted you can do whatever you want as far as pattern and color. It's more expensive and you have to find a good body shop you trust with your car. It'll be more personalized and won't look like everyone else's stripes.

It's up to you.

I have vinyl bumblebee stripes. They are doing fine so far and they are a lot cheaper than painting.

I will be painting mine when I find someone local. What worries me is when I get nick / chip in the white strip how do you fix it ? It hasn't happened yet, but it will. Paint I can always fix, vinyl ?

Vinyl are cheaper and Can be taken off if needed to. Paint holds up better.

my question has always been --- if i get stripes, take them off in a few years -- is the paint going to be faded around the stripes so there is a noticeable difference where the stripes were?

My car is black.

There are pros and cons to either. I throw out what I see...

Vinyl
Pros:
-Much cheaper. Usually around 1/3 or the cost.
-If you don't like the color or want to change the look or anything they can be removed.
-If installed by a Pro your everything should be nice and straight.

Cons:
-Won't last as long as paint especially if left outside.
-Some people don't like the fact that you can feel the edge of the vinyl. They want it nice and smooth.
-Possible fadding and cracking over time.

Paint
Pros:
-More permenant. If don't correctly it's the way to go.
-Nice and smooth if clearcoated.

Cons:
-Much more expensive.
-It's a one time shot. If you don't like it for some reason you have to re-do everything.
-No changing of color or design down the road if you want.
-Make sure to have a good painter that knows what they are doing. If the lines are off or if they put the paint on to heavy it can bleed through.

I went with vinyl mostly because of price and the abilty to change the color down the road. I was thinking that i might go with black stripes but now that I've had my white stripes I don't think that's going to happen. The guy I found did a FANTASTIC job. The mail slot was not an issue. Everything lined up perfectly and he even rounded the vinyl over the edges just like paint. I've actually had people in shock that it wasn't painted. Now I think my guy was better than the average vinyl installer but look ask around and you'll find them. I go my custom stripes + gills + visors done for $480 out the door. Couldn't be happier and would absolutley do it all over again.

Here is a pic I came across last week of some painted stripes. Look close at the pin stripes on around the outer edge of the stripe. see how the paint bled through making the edges jagged. Look at how the pin stripes are not straight. If you were to pick up your car from the shop and see this then you'll be having to have them re-do the job and if they do this BS the first time it will probably happen again.

My car is black.
I asked this of my vinyl guy. He said there would be some fadding but more than anything there will be light scratches where the vinyl isn't. He said evertime you wash/wipe on the paint you are going to put tiny little scratches. Nothing really noticeable until you take off the stipes and see the paint that is almost perfect.

I talked to a local body shop the other day about painted or vinyl and he recommended putting vinyl stripes on and then doing a clear coat over the vinyl. He said he had done this setup to a few corvette owners that brought their cars to him and it turned out great. I welcome the feedback from anyone that has any knowledge on vinyl and clear coating.

Thanks. My car is outside and I have seen faded vinyl stripes and it makes the car look like sh*t. Thats the only thing I'm worried about with the vinyl. And the paint if even more of a concern because I would lose my mind if its not a 100% perfect job. So I'm limbo like crazy. I might just buckle down get Funkmaster Flex or Chip Foose folks do it.

IMHO ... I think the factory stripes really don't do the car justice. A little too skinny, and they fall short (literally) front and rear. The stencil kit from Clean Cut Creations makes painting them on a breeze for any talented painter, and I think the results speak for themselves ...
No disrespect to anyone with factory stripes ... just my $.02 ......
