How should I treat my brand new SS

I have never bought a BRAND NEW car before-- never had to go thru the break in process except once with a motorcycle... any tips as to how I should drive for the firs XXXX miles??? Should I not hammer on it alot? Although Im thinking I will need to whip one big shivvy pulling out of the dealers lot in july !!

Instruction manual. People here are split between "drive like you stole it" and "follow the instruction manual."

Amanda, you will get a lot of different answers, there are two different schools of thought:
1. DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT from start to finish.
2. Look at you manual you got with your car....their is a section that describes the bread in period.
then you can go somewhere in the middle......its really all up to you.

BUT, one thing most people will agree on, and its not in the manual, YOUR FIRST OIL CHANGE SHOULOD BE AFTER 1000-1500 MILES.

Id do the "Owners manual" route. If you just spent a large amount of money on a new vehicle, why not get "Everything" out of it. Take your time with the car, you are going to have it a while. JMO.

I kept it under 100mph and under 4000 rpgs for the first 800 miles.
Changed oil at 1000 miles.

I just drove mine "normally". I didn't over do it, but I didn't under do it, if that makes sense.

I dropped the hammer a few times leaving stop lights and when entering the free way, but other than that, I just drove it like your normal everyday driving.

Personally, she's more than my first new car to me. She's Eleanor. She's the hot redhead I picked up after I beat her in a game a pool at the bar. I'm aggressive when I want to hug the curves and gentle when in for a long trip. And I've never looked back since.

Drive it however you like. The fact is, the Engines built nowadays are so good. I changed my oil last week. And the filter had ONE metal shaving... nothing else lol. =D

I broke mine in "under load" which is very different from "like you stole it". No back pressure on the engine with lots of hard pulls from a rolling start through third. I quit that at 500 miles and went the next 1000 miles driving normally (still no back pressure though...no down shifting) varying the rpm (no 100 mile runs at 70...10 miles at 60...20 miles at 65...30 miles at 70...etc.) and changed the oil out at 1500 miles.

It all depends on if you want to get the most HP possible out of it or you bought it more for the looks and to tool around in.

Read this for more information on breaking in your car: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39955
